Shows GPA/STA (or ACT) on a grid, with each dot coded so show accepted/wl/reject, and also ED/EA. If the data are rich it gives an idea of what range of GPAs and test scores are needed to get in or have no chance. |
| You can get the same info with an online search. The fact that students X from STA got in with a certain GPA/test scores is not helpful when it doesn't share the other factors that helped that kid get in. |
It's more helpful than the generic stuff online. A 4.5 GPA from public high schools doesn't translate to a GPA from STA. Not to mention you don't know the other factors that helped that 4.5 PS kid get in. |
Naviance doesn’t tell you any factors other than GPA and a standardized test score. Yes, even for STA students. It’s barely useful in that regard. |
In the cumulative it is helpful. When the google search suggests you need above a 4.0 to get in (which is what a huge number of colleges claim), but your school doesn't give many 4.0s, it is helpful to see that that same college never rejected anyone from your school from a 3.3 and up, with lots of dots populating the grid. Yes, there are other factors that matter, but as a starting point, it helps you know whether you are on the playing field or not. Similarly if you have a 3.5 and see that a school has only accepted 4.0s from your school with lots of populated dots and many Xs, or that the school never accepts even your school's 4.0s, then you know this school is more than a reach. You still may give it a shot, but you know you need to be bringing something spectacular to do the unprecedented. |
| Lots of RDs from great schools came out last week...I know it wasn't "Ivy Day" but I was hoping this thread got picked back up because of some good news in last weeks RDs for Sidwell kids? |
Except that Sidwell kids aren't doing so well this year with prestigious universities, who don't want to accept privileged kids anymore, who are boring and add nothing to classroom discussions, and have have extensive advantages in terms of test prep, tutoring, etc., that public schools don't have. Don't forget that. Doesn't look pretty this year for Sidwell. |
That's more universal than Sidwell. |
| It has been a very tough and wildly unpredictable year everywhere. Across the DMV (within schools) and across the country. Applications at a large number of schools are through the roof. |
How would you have any idea? My kid is in the senior class and there have been many acceptances to all sorts of great schools. |
tell me about - we go to Whitman and no one there is privileged, does test prep or tutoring. That's why prestigious universities fell over themselves this year to accept kids from here. |
Wrong, sorry. Were you one of the Brown 20? I can see why things would look bleak from that POV |
No, I'm not. It's looking a bit better now than for ED, but it's hardly worth paying $1 million+ in tuition. But you know, it's only fair. Universities are tired of our elite kids. It's time for other, more worthy kids to get a chance at Ivy educations. |
Same at BCC. And we are nothing compared to all the kids across our nation who have grown up in really difficult circumstances, without any privilege at all. Those kids are being seen by universities as the kids who really deserve a second look. Kids who might change the world. |
| So, what's the verdict now? Any improvement in Sidwell's fortunes? |
