Metropolitan DC Local Politics
This is the only way it can work. But we also need to be sure to set up rules for cyclists that they need to follow. |
| Cyclists, just stay off the sidewalks and remember that pedestrians have the right of way in intersections even if your pedal foot is itchy. You typically don't do these things and have a bunch of excuses about how being mowed down by a biker never hurt anyone, but if you want this pedestrians sympathy, you'll need to act like you know rules exist and apply to you too. |
| Cyclists are permitted to ride on sidewalks in most instances. And, yes, they need to slow down, be respectful and yield to pedestrians. |
IOW cyclists don't give a hoot about peds, cars or anyone else for that matter. That's why these discussions are so pointless. Share the road means give it all to them in their minds. |
Do you "share the road" means "get out of my way"? The PP clearly said they are deferential to pedestrians when on the sidewalk. That is sharing the sidewalk with them. You can do the same when driving on a road that people on bikes are using. |
I agree and this largely tracks with my experience -- both in a car and on a bike. So many cyclists pedal with a "holier than thou" and "entitled" attitude that they've given a bad reputation to everyone else. This is also why I think cyclists and their bikes need to be regulated more on par with motorists and cars. |
Question for the two PP who have broad generalizations about cyclists- how do you normally get around the city? On foot? By car? Public transportation? I am always curious what the mentality is where someone paints other road users with such a board burst, even ascribing mental states to them. I get around the city mainly by foot, then by car, the public transport, then biking and I have certainly noticed people behaving in jerky way using all types of transport (inclusion bus drivers haha) but I don't then think "all drivers are entitled" or all cyclists are entitled" because a few of them make me angry. I am curious if people who paint other with such a broad brush are primarily drivers or pedestrians or something else. |
It is true that sidewalk cycling is permitted but it shouldn't be. That's a vestige of pre-boom dc when the sidewalks were underused. It is true that some cyclists yield to pedestrians on sidewalks and in intersections, but not enough do. There's a selfish, entitled culture there fueled by adrenaline and founded on sanctimony. I find my conflicts with cyclists are less as a driver and much more as a pedestrian. |

Dear Cyclists,
With Rights come Responsibilities Signed, Everybody Else |
*Except drivers. We can do what we want because we are very important. Besides, we'll just be parked in this illegal spot for a minute. |
| And cyclists wonder why everyone hates them… |
Drivers pay fines and get in trouble. There is a system to identify them when they cause trouble and they need to demonstrate some competence in order to get started. That doesn't mean there still aren't problems but cyclists operate with no accountability... and it shows. Signed, pedestrian tired of having to jump out of the way in crosswalks and on sidewalks when adrenaline-fueled cyclists think they're too super to yield. |
| Bike riding license needed. Ditto for all the electric pedestrian scooters, one wheels, skateboards if they are used in the streets. |
So...how is a 6 year old going to get a bike license? How much is it going to cost? |
In my experience neither seems to be true. |
