Lol driver fines for blocking bike lanes. If only |
Why don't you think cyclists shouldn't be required to be licensed? PS-the argument that "cars never get tickets" is false and will not work so come up with something else. |
|
If a cyclist goes through a stop sign, it is an inconvenience. If a car does it, it ends in injury or death.
|
What about the danger the cyclist is in? They may not care about their own safety but no one wants to be involved in an accident even if it's not their fault. It just sounds like cyclists don't want any system that might hold them accountable. If a car has to dodge out of the way that does put the driver(and others) at risk. |
| Someone is going to get killed. With the new pedestrian law in NOVA, there was an immediate uptick in people walking out into major roads without even looking. They figure it's my right, it's so kewl. But it's ignorant. Rights don't keep your body intact. What will rights do if youre dead? Stop, look both ways, then cross a street. Encouraging cyclists not to stop is so much worse because a bike can pop in front of a 35 MPH SUV in milliseconds compared to a walker or jogger. At least I have time to slam on the brakes for a pedestrian. |
OK, then the car can wait until pedestrians and cyclists have cleared the intersection. You should already be doing this for pedestrians anyway, easy enough to pause for a few more seconds to make sure a cyclists is also out of the way. You want the ability to comfortably sit in a large vehicle with air conditioning that shoves the pollution burden onto other people then you can wait in your stopped car until cyclists and pedestrians are clear of the intersection. |
Requirements for licensing and registration are based on the need to regulate them for public safety. Things like guns (ok, that’s argued against in deep red states), cars, airplanes, boats, and such meet that criteria. Stuff that annoys you does not. Bikes, kayaks, kites, roller blades, etc. It has been tried, and it’s a silly waste of time that benefits no one. |
Why shouldn't pedestrians be licensed then? DC used to require bicycles be registered. They stopped because the benefit didn't outweigh the cost. |
Then operate your car safely and it will all be good. I have walked every day because of COVID, for the last 2+ years. The number of cars that come to a complete stop at a stop sign in my DC neighborhood is zero. So let's check our own actions before we worry about others. |
I do not believe you. There is no stop sign anywhere where NO cars stop ever. That is one BS argument. |
So in other words, yes, as a cyclist you do not want to be held responsible for your actions. But we already knew that. And this is more than an annoyance and you know it. |
Cyclists, please operate YOUR bike safely. Come to stops at stop signs and lights, do not speed through crosswalks when there are pedestrians already walking. Maintain a safe speed. Signal when turning. Do not ride up on the right side of vehicles that are turning and expect them to suddenly stop IF they see you. Do not ride in packs that are impossible to pass. Again, with rights come responsibilities. The fact that people keep trying to turn this into a discussion about car safety basically means most of you have no good excuse for your selfish and dangerous actions. |
The bolded is literally the point of this thread. It is not necessarily safer for bikers or cars for bikers to come to a complete stop at every sign/light. If you would like reasons, I suggest you read the first 30 pages of this thread |
| I would vote for a politician who promises to get rid of all of the bike lanes. |

Riding a bike in a major city is never going to be safe. It is inherently dangerous and there's nothing anyone can do about that. It's like boxing.
The difference between boxers and cyclists is that boxers aren't entitled little ***ches who lobby the government to spend billions of dollars in a doomed campaign to make their hobby safe. |
