Travel Soccer teams around NOVA let's discuss

My experience with high school and ccl is that they play all the way through Dec because of showcase tourneys, but then the regular CCL season is pretty much over in March.

Don't know but I would guess earlier than most club teams. How will they handle keepers for that age group ? Do they expect kids to start specializing that early at keeper ?

No doubt we have passionate parents in travel soccer in the DMV. But playing in top tier at Bethesda this weekend once again proved to me that we aren't in the same league as the loonies from New Jersey and Pennsyltucky. It started from the moment I was pulling into Summerhill on Saturday morning when a car from NJ cut me off and got no better the rest of the day. The bad behavior of the parents was really sickening.

I'm curious about this, too.

We saw some bad behavior from some NJ parents, and am wondering if it was an isolated incident.

It's Jersey. This has been going on since the 80s. No real surprise here. Some of the worst parents I remember as a child was playing soccer tournaments up in Long Island. A bunch of Tony Sopranos on the sidelines.

New Yorkers are really bad too. The first time my kid played against a NY team 7 yrs ago at U9, it struck me how loud and obnoxious they were. And they don't adhere to the "sit on the half of the field opposite your own team" so they were mixed in with our parents. Every time since then I've had to move away from NY parents sitting in the "wrong" half of the field.

What is up with that???

You are supposed to sit directly across from your home team's bench!! Do not sit pass the mid-line Parents still don't do this in the DMV. Don't get me started on behind the goal spectators.

Some host Bethesda parents in the Bethesda tournament stayed across from our bench the entire game and it just creates tension having to hear the other parents say sh*t about your team/players. I was ready to lose my mind.

Yep. We got this from the DMV parents. Spread out from the halfway point in both directions.

11:24 - do you feel the same when kids play on both a travel team and a rec team? We let our daughter stay on her rec team after she made travel because we all love her rec team and the parents and the coach. It's one game a week, and it's her chance to win when her travel team is in a losing streak because they're still finding their way. She's only in second grade, though - I don't imagine we'll do both teams forever. maybe one more year.

Or the ones that switch halves at halftime so they can be in the half that their player is in. I guess they need to be close enough that the player can hear them shouting commands/encouragement?? That is extreme helicoptering if you can't just watch an entire game from one position and keep your mouth shut.

I field marshaled a game this weekend and watched a couple others at the Bethesda tournament and was pleasantly surprised to find that everyone was extremely well behaved in the games, which included NY, NJ and PA teams. In general I agree that NJ and NY teams are more likely to have obnoxious coaches and parent--PA teams have been a mix.

I was also happy to see how many college coaches were watching the games (for teams in the 5th to 7th flight down from the top). Perhaps that explains the good parent behavior!

I only saw the switching from goalkeeper parents, and give them the benefit of the doubt that it had to do with anxiety about strong winds and light goals. But my kid is still young, so it may be different in older ages.

Examples?

The entire sideline of Supernova (PA) parents SCREAMING at the ref the entire game. I felt bad for the ref. I guess no one adheres to the code of conduct, which clearly states no discussion with the referee. Another pattern I see is parents screaming for a yellow card when their kid is shouldered off the ball or just trips from incidental contact. But then their kid is steamrolling other players, elbowing, grabbing, etc. The Matchfit (NJ) parents were big on this.

Matchfit used to be in the DA, and their parents were absolutely awful--unrelenting screaming and cursing throughout every game.
