Landon, G Prep and STA academics. Please rank and why.

Considering the three but I just don't have a definite feel for the level of academic strength at each. Any thoughts?

If you were to rank the schools based soley on College Placement and the # of National Merit Scholar Finalists just in the past 10 years:

1. STA is the top academically.
2. Landon
3. Prep

Landon and Prep are certainly more sports focused. I do know Landon has a terrific arts and music program.

I would explore all 3 schools and let your son determine which school he feels most comfortable at.

+1

Landon and STA are very good academically. Picking one vs the other is really more about the feel of the school and its location/commute.

Prep is fine academically but has a very different vibe than Landon and STA based on its Catholic foundation. It's a commitment to a unique educational environment that is more in line with places like Gonzaga and St Johns.

I'm famaliar and connected in various ways to all 3 schools. They are all quite different from one another and are different offerings, so to speak. STA is the best academically. It's in the city and more international then the other 2. In some ways its traditions hark back to the British boarding schools of years ago. It's all-boys but with very close ties with NCS. Landon is very surburban and its ties with Holton are not nearly as strong as STA's with NCS. Landon is a good school and strong in sports and the performing arts. Landon has had a bumpy last 10 years, but they have the institutional strength to weather the storm. They will and the school will no doubt improve in the next 5 years or so. Prep is another good school, not quite as strong academically as Landon as they are bigger and draw from a more narrow pool of applicants than the other 2. Although it is a wealthier and more suburban school than Gonzaga, it is closer institutionally with Gonzaga than either Landon or NCS, due to its status as a Jesuit school and the top Catholic school in the area. Prep has a strong tradition, is the oldest of the three by far, and has strong historical ties with both Georgetown U. and of course, the Society of Jesus. All 3 are good schools, but they are so different that you should first look within yourself to determine your family identity and it's path into the future before you make a selection, assuming your boy has the academic talent to be accepted at all 3 schools.

Well said.

All of these schools are filled with wealthy, privalleged kids.

Both schools push their students hard in the classroom and push their students to top academic colleges.

Landon and Prep historically are not as academically strong as St. Albans and focus a lot more on athletics. (Prep maybe more than Landon)

Landon and Prep have suburban campus, STA is in the city and backs up to the Cathedral.

Have your son visit each school, talk to parents from each school, and go with the one that feels most like home.

Someone writes an excellent post (9/5 at 8:12), but it gets no play here on DCUM because most folks want to post derogatory and devisive comments regardless of the topic, or so it seems.

The majority of the kids who attend these schools belong to country clubs. They really are not that much different. 80% of the kids at these schools come from very privalleged families. Yes, I understnad these schools offer need based schlarships but none of the private schools are really socioally ecnomic diverses to begin with.
