Where does this "you cannot block doors" come from. I have literally seen the principal and teachers at our ES blocking the main entrance to prevent a kid from leaving. |
| The problem with the "oh was the kid SN or not" take is that in kindergarten you often don't know yet! My DS is SN with anxiety and in fact eloped a fair amount from his classroom in 1st grade (before then it didn't happen). It's largely stopped since then. It doesn't make him a bad kid. It doesn't make me a bad parent (maybe other things do, who knows, but not that). It also doesn't make it easy on the teachers and other staff who have to deal with this. He actually did try to run off campus one day on the playground. A teacher followed him and led him back. It makes no sense that the police would have to be called in such a situation -- what, the teachers have to let the kid run off? What if he gets hit by a car or kidnapped while the teacher calls 911? Ridiculous. |
Imagine locking hundreds of children in a building that can't be unlocked by pushing the door unlock bar on the inside. Are you out of your mind? Have you ever heard of fire safety? |
Our school doors were locked for safety and someone coming in. You clearly haven't been to a school recently. |
If a kid goes around, they cannot grab that kid and forcible stop them. Block as in we don't want you here and please go there and kids complying is different. |
Locked from the outside, unlocked from the inside. |

The body camera video from this incident has now been released:

| Having watched it, I hope his parents win this lawsuit and take the cops involved for millions. |
| That kid is tiny. Terrible. |
It’s extremely disturbing. There’s no way the SRO thing can continue after this. The MCPD should be embarrassed for both trying to prevent the public release of this video, which they are legally required to do. But also for being sure to let everyone know that these officers will not be fired and as a result will not receive any significant punishment. Totally gross and inexcusable. |
| The school employees involved in this also need to go. |
| The video in Bethesda beat is intense. I did feel like everyone was doing what they thought was right. But all the “Hood” explanations and justifications seemed so extreme. The kid was clearly terrified. The mom continued to talk about beating her own child legally and not wanting to go to jail. The cop was basically encouraging her to beat the child. I can imagine what a school administrator would think having to listen to all that. |
The school administrator, as any good bureaucrat, was probably thinking that she was pretty happy that the cop was dealing with this so that she did not have to. Passive CYA mode. |
I also suspect that the administrator saw Black cops, a Black kid, and a Black mom, all seemingly acquiescing to this treatment and wondered whether it was her role to step in. |
