I actually don't think the Dranesville race comes down to whether you favor a Democratic or Republican agenda and priorities, although they are not irrelevant. One adage attributed to Tip O'Neill is "all politics are local." In Dranesville's case, there are two candidates (Karloutsos and Mobasheri) who clearly were drawn into the race because they want to protect Langley's boundaries. Period. The arguments they make to advance that goal are different, but they are arguments in service to that goal. Their candidacies may appeal to some in the Langley pyramid, especially those in Great Falls, but Dranesville also includes the McLean and Herndon pyramids and a good chunk of Marshall. And Tholen is the only one of the three candidates who appears to have been drawn into the race with the interests of students throughout the entire district in mind. In a sense, that may mean that she looks more favorably on One Fairfax, but that strikes me as a good thing, and I don't see One Fairfax as nearly as prescriptive as the Republicans, in particular, are claiming. If the question that has to be asked in connection with every decision is "Is this good for Langley" or "Is this good for Dranesville (or Fairfax)," I'd rather have someone with the broader focus, and that is Tholen. |
| What would each of these candidates do for Herndon to make it desirable? Additional resources and new ways of teaching (project momentum) have been provided for years and ratings continue to decline. |
|
Well at least we know that Pat "get rid of gifted and talented programs" Hynes supports Elaine Tholen.
Very reassuring. |
McLean made noise. They weren't enough, but when the school board had to explain to the rest of the county why they couldn't make a boundary change (that the McLean Citizens association passed a resolution calling for, by the way) they had to act. ONE school pyramid can't do it, but parents across the county heard about their policy revision. Why do you think the Superintendent sent an email to EVERY parent in FCPS? Why do you think he posted that video to YouTube? Because of Langley? No one pyramid is that important. |
FCPS is required by state law to meet the needs of academically advanced students. Hynes has challenged the AAP model in FCPS that separates kids into different tracks based on tests in second grade. She is not alone in her views, either within FCPS (just look at the AAP forum) or outside FCPS (other systems like Arlington have rejected the AAP model of FCPS). I actually haven't heard Tholen speak about that issue, other than to note at least one of her kids was in AAP. Tholen's interests in planning and environmental sustainability would earn her Hynes' support, although of course Hynes has no sympathy for candidates like Mobasheri and Karloutsos who make preserving Langley's boundaries in perpetuity their primary campaign issue. |
Nothing is going to boost Herndon's ratings so it doesn't matter who I vote for. All candidates most likely will throw some money or get behind some program to look like they're doing something for Herndon all while keeping Langley and McLean happy. |
I don't think you can just look at Herndon's ratings. You have to look at the trends in Herndon's demographics and then consider whether, absent the additional resources FCPS spends on schools with those trends, its performance would have declined further. White and Asian kids at Herndon continue to do well. Non-Asian Minorities: 2010: 33% 2011: 35% 2012: 37% 2013: 40% 2014: 47% 2015: 47% 2016: 50% 2017: 51% 2018: 51% 2019: 53% |
| Right, tell this to the GF folks. They should be fine if their kids were moved to Herndon if it were to happen. |

Anastasia Karloutsos has a long history of working for less-privileged children.
This is good because when she is elected to the Board she will bring that perspective of actually working to help these students. "Anastasia S. Karloutsos is a passionate advocate for education, school safety, and parental involvement. As a high school student, Anastasia founded a nonprofit to provide a safe after-school learning environment for underperforming, low-income elementary school children, for which she received the America’s Promise Award presented by Governor Jeb Bush and Ret. General Colin Powell in 2000. She also served six years on the Board of HOPE Partnership for Education, a nonprofit school serving underprivileged, low performing students in 5th-8th grade in North Philadelphia." https://anastasia4kids.com/about/ |
Some of us would like the school board to work on helping all the children. It's the right thing to do, it benefits the society, and wouldn't it be fun if all our schools SMOKED every other school in the state. |
Nothing quite says "I love diversity" like moving into the Langley district, the least diverse in NoVa, and then touting an endorsement from a local group (Voices of Fairfax) started by a bunch of Great Falls residents who call Herndon a "gang-ridden * * * sanctuary city" and show up at School Board work sessions screaming that FCPS "lets all the illegals in." She may be better than the people she surrounds herself with, but sheesh... |
Excuse me, where does Elaine Tholen live? Janie Strauss? |
| Yes. Elaine Tholen has signed the pledge to call for an end to cooperation with ICE. |
To their credit, Elaine Tholen and Janie Strauss haven't held themselves out as Mother Teresa, while simultaneously basking in the support of a reactionary right-wing group like One Great Falls/Voices of Fairfax. |
So, work done prior to running for office shouldn't be on someone's resume? And, Struass has always held herself out as a bleeding heart liberal--meanwhile sending her own kids to McLean schools. |
