Ugh, that's the same garbage women get hit with all the time when they try to stand up to sexism -- who cares what men are allowed to get away with, you just keep your pretty little head down for the comfort of everyone else.

So when women are being discriminated against they should just be nice about it.

No, they should throw tantrums, break their racquets, call the officials names, and threaten to stuff a ball down their throats. THAT is how they get what they want. /s

I punched my boss when he grabbed my ass, but your right I should have broken a racquet over his head ... called him names and actually stuffed the ball down his throat.

no one outside of the us is siding with Serena here.

I'm the poster who has been a tennis fan for over 40 years. I've stopped reading most all of the European tennis forums. The sexism and racism is overwhelming. I can still count on immediate racist comments in those forums and the Australian.

sure... only americans are not racist, the nation that actually had slavery and then separate schools and facilities based on race. laughable.

Why should men and women athletes earn the same amount of money? More purple pay more money to watch the men in almost every sport

Should men and women salespeople earn the same amount of money regardless of how many people buy their products?

You are wrong about tennis. They bring in about the same money. Overall crowds are dwindling for both men's and women's tennis. Don't know if you noticed pp that the joint was packed for Serena's match

You do realize that Osaka holds American citizenship and has lived in the US for 17 years, while only living in Japan for three years.

I get that she has chosen to play under the Japanese flag, but she is as American as anyone else who is a citizen. You can't take that away from her.

Mom is Japanese, her dad is Haitian

So is then the new young hope of US tennis Frances Tiafoe not American? He plays for the US flag, and was born here but his parents are definitely not US born. Is that what makes the difference that he was born here? Osaka's father moved to US to attend New York University, then to Japan then back to US. I presume he got US citizenship down the road, just as his daughters had. The reason Naomi and her sister play for Japan is that Japan gave them funds for tennis. USTA did not.

I don't get this last comment. Is it a problem that people are pointing out that Naomi Osaka is of Haitian and Japanese ancestry, holds both Japanese and US passports, and spent most of her life growing up in the US? I think it's kind of cool.

In terms of funding, I read that the dad decided to have them play as Japanese. When you say USTA did not fund them, are you saying that they tried to get funding from USTA but were turned down? How is it decided who gets funding and who does not?

The USTA Player Development group/team whatever are notoriously incompentent - at least when Patrick McEnroe was a part of it. Player Developemnt was run by a bunch of know nothing old white guys who mostly supported children of prior tennis stars. Lots of AA players got short shrift and avoided USTA. They may be hard to find but I remember Courier and McEnroe insulting the hell out of Donald Young because he wouldnt' jump to what the usta wanted him to do. They tried to convince him to move to Spain to be Nadal's hitting partner which was a ticket to nowhere. Every time the guys got some tv time, they spent all of it insulting him. Don't even get me started on Taylor Townsend who they refused to support because of her "lack of fitness".

According to a comment Everett made during the match, the USTA overlooked Naomi after she was evaluated.

please stop using the example of donald young as a great talent that should have been invested into. it has always been obvious that he was never going to amount to anything.

https://www.vox.com/2017/1/28/14424624/serena-williams-wins-australian-open-venus-record-racist-sexist-attacks

David Leonard, chair of the department of critical culture, gender, and race studies at Washington State University, compiled the following tweets, which he recorded after Williams won her fifth Wimbledon title in 2012, in a post for his personal blog arguing that she faced racist treatment from the media and fans alike:

Today a giant gorilla escaped the zoo and won the womens title at Wimbledon... oh that was Serena Williams? My mistake.
Serena Williams is a gorilla
Watching tennis and listening to dad talk about how Serena Williams looks like gorilla from the mist
I don't see how in the hell men find Serena Williams attractive?! She looks like a male gorilla in a dress, just saying!
You might as well just bang a gorilla if you're going to bang Serena Williams
Earlier this week I said that all female tennis players were good looking. I was clearly mistaken: The Gorilla aka Serena Williams.
serena williams looks like a gorilla
Serena Williams is half man, half gorilla! I'm sure of it.
Serena Williams look like a man with tits, its only when she wears weave she looks female tbh, what a HENCH BOLD GORILLA!
Serena Williams is a gorilla in a skirt playing tennis #Wimbledon

I agree with you about USTA. Constant mismanagement. As for Townsend, honestly without race, gender, etc, do you think she could have benefited from weight loss? USTA handled it poorly, no doubt, but look at that scrawny Djokovic, how fast he moves, is being fit and slimmer better for tennis player? I keep thinking Townsend could have been top 20 by now if she was more fit. I don't think her arms and legs and their size is the issue, I think her pooch is slowing her down. If you look at Serena, she is slim in her middle and powerful in her limbs. Just what is your opinion on how that extra weight affects her(or any players) movement on the court?

chase commercial also didn't help Serena. I think it might have unconsciously affected the umpire so that he might have felt more protective."I will take you out" - really? This is tennis, not boxing.

You never watche McEnroe play. And you definitely never watched Jimmy Connors or Ille Nasty Nastase play. Nobody has come close to that maniac.

that was 40+ years ago when tennis players were getting like 100k in today's money for winning a GS. it was a different time, let it go.

Djokovic and Nadal are very much today. And they have done the same damn thing and nay a point taken from them. You stop mansplaining.

John McEnroe did that every match.

That was 40 years ago. Wouldn’t fly today.

But it does, whenever Djokovic decides he wants to or if he feels cheated by the ump.

you must be a part of that bigoted US crowd that always attacks djokovic. i am so glad he won, you miserable suckers.

Bigot. Bitch I love him. But unlike you, I don’t make excuses and think believe no one should be treated differently because of sex, race, or national origin. At least we now we know PP you admit that you make exceptions for those you like.

That's how women are categorized when standing up for themselves... Hysterical... Men are assertive. Double standard.

There is a straight up racist a few pages back but somehow you managed to make the most annoying post in the thread

No kidding. Since when is smashing your racquet in anger “standing up for” yourself?

Ask Sampras, Agassi, Sharapanova, Nader, Djokovic and all the many other players who have smashed racquets.

smashing racquet is an automatic penalty.

Depends on the ump and player

Why yes lil missy. They need to be reminded of their place unless they start believing to high of themselves.

The column by Martina Natrilova (sp?) in the NYTimes got it right. She embarrassed herself but the different treatment of women needs to be corrected.

It works for the top male players.
