From what I hear, it's business reasons. Nothing philosophical or personal. |
Eddie is a fine person and coach and he did a decent job considering what he faced with all the cliques, politics, and insularity of VYS as a "community club" with its distrust of sacrifice and innovation and its prizing of comfortable neighborhood mediocrity over excellence. |
While Eddie has done a lot of good things for VYS, it's clear from the many Eddie defenders in this thread that some VYS parents were unaware or unwilling to acknowledge the many problems with Eddie. So while the ultimate decision not to renew his contract might be presented as a business decision, if it wasn't for the history of Eddie's bullying behavior and decisions favoring his friends and personal interests to the detriment of the children, those business disagreements could have been overcome. VYS still faces some difficult choices and two not-so-difficult decisions, but this was something that will make VYS stronger and better in the long run. |
Has there ever been a Technical Director who wasn't a bully at times? There are quite a few VYS appointed and self-appointed honchos who are absolutely monumental jerks, but I just don't think Eddie was one of them. I may be wrong about that.
Who specifically, or what kind of person, will be in the running to replace him? |
I think monumental jerk is a very accurate description of Eddie's behavior if you ever did anything he perceived as inconsistent with his opinion. I can't think of many things more "jerky" than punishing a child because of a disagreement with their parents.

Agreed! |
Just saw the news that Annandale is leaving the CCL. |
Interesting. I assume that was their choice but from what I've seen, they often didn't put their best team in. On the girls side, they would often assign their best teams to FCV to play ECNL and then put second or third tied teams into CCL. I'd guess they'll be missed more on the boys side instead of the girls. |
FYI for those who follow the Vienna news, there is a discussion going on about the VYS/Eddie Lima situation in the comments to this article posted on Potomacsoccerwire.com: http://www.soccerwire.com/news/eddie-lima-departs-as-technical-director-of-vienna-youth-soccer/
I wish more people would start commenting on that site. They used to have really entertaining open forums, but now you are limited to commenting on the articles they post. It's still a very good source for local and national soccer news though. |
There's a valid reason for why the discussion has dried upon PSW. As you note, it used to be that posters could start a thread about soccer developments that interested them. Now, PSW strictly limits what you can write about. PSW posters have come to realize the the site is about page views and advertising dollars by way of carefully packaged soccer stories friendly to its interests. |
Speaking of PSW, it's interesting that they will let the mom of Eddie's girlfriend post in their discussions but will moderate comments from people who know details of what lead to his contract not being renewed because PSW doesn't want the truth to come about about Eddie such as how he hired unqualified trainers from his own company just so he could get a cut of their salaries. Wonder how many other posters on there are Eddie's buddies and not really VYS parents? |
I'd bet PSW has no idea what you're talking about. They're using Disqus. How would they even know one of those commenters is the mom of Eddie's girlfriend? And whose comments are being moderated? |
Anyone who doesn't use Disqus must have their comments approved before they are posted. Given how many people have been bullied by Eddie and the professional staff who still remain at the club, some of us prefer to post anonymously.
Regarding how Eddie's friends who have no relationship with or insight into the club are posting, my point is that PSW has biased the discussion and refuses to allow posts explaining why the Board had no choice but to let Eddie go. PSW is more concerned about protecting its relationships with those soccer trainers and clubs that advertise on its site than it is with being an objective "news" outlet that informs its readers of what's really happening. In other words, PSW will let you post anything, no matter how untrue or uninformed, if you praise Eddie, but if you identify one of his many improprieties, then they censor it. You can't have a real conversation if only one side gets to participate. |
I keep hoping that the local soccer discussion will migrate to a different forum, and I'll google every few months to see if someone has started something up (I'm an inveterate lurker). Since you seem knowledgeable, I'll ask you this: Why don't the people who used to post on the PSW forums and any interested others use the talking-soccer.com Maryland or Virginia boards? The Massachusetts and Florida boards are very active there, along with those for a couple of other states. There is lots of mudslinging and annoying unmoderated comments, but there are some good ones too. |
I should have added that I think DCUM is the best forum around, and it's the only one I post on. I think this could take the place of the old PSW forums if more people realized it was here and available. It's hard to know how to advertise it to the anonymous folks who were part of the old community though... |
