Actually, I don’t really care whether people like her or not. I understand she is not everyone’s cup of tea. I think people mainly take issue with the criticisms that come from generalizations or ignorance, or even a dismissal of her themes as unimportant because they appeal to young women as though that is a bad thing. There’s a deeper body of work there underneath the radio hits. I understand not everyone has the time or willingness to listen to them. But many people still speak before they know. |
Then give me an example of something I should listen to and appreciate. |
DP. Also, she has A LOT of hits. If none of those are hitting, as it were, how likely is it that the rest of the body of work is going to appeal to me. Seems unlikely. |

PP here and a lot of what people are labeling as "correcting misinformation" is just arguing with someone's opinion though. Consistently I see Swifties in this thread taking an opinion that is fairly well articulated ("I don't think Swift collaborates on her music in a creative way -- she is just laying vocal tracks over backing tracks provided by producers who then mix the songs") and reframe it in a way they can argue with ("so you're saying Swift doesn't adequately credit her producing partners but actually she talks about them all the time so you're just wrong"). It makes for a really difficult to follow conversation because there is zero interest in actually engaging with any opinion other than "Taylor Swift is amaaaaazing" and even if you put effort into trying to articulate why her music sounds bland or homogeneous to you (which is the actual topic of this thread) your words will be twisted to say something else and then you will be told you have no right to an opinion because you don't know enough about Swift personally or haven't watched every piece of media about her or read every one of her liner notes. It's exhausting and it doesn't sway my position on her music either way or even give me any deeper appreciation for her work (something I probably could acquire -- I'm deeply interested in music and I do think Swift is a talented lyricist even if I don't really enjoy her overall sound). It just reminds me "oh yeah Taylor Swift has an army of diehard fans who won't allow anyone to say anything negative about her even if it's an impersonal critique of the work she has chosen to put into the marketplace." Which sucks for those of us who genuinely like talking about music. |
I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary and I'm not a TS fan. I am a fan of well made documentaries, and a fan of films that document the creative process....so for me the film was well worth watching. |
I totally agree. I’m a musician who tried to articulate an argument about how she doesn’t really write her music and rather has her producers do it, while she writes the lyrics. I’d like people to acknowledge that more, rather than calling her a hugely talented songwriter, which I question if she doesn’t really write more than the lyrics. I was told I’m misogynistic. I live and breath music. I gig regularly. I adore music. This is so alienating to me and makes me really not respect her fanbase. |
There's this masterpiece about her sweater https://youtu.be/K-a8s8OLBSE?feature=shared |
I do know that one because I had to learn it for a gig. Melody is very meandering, in sort of a random way. |
I tried and felt like I’ve heard versions of that song from her before. Dreamy whisper pop. Got bored half way through and turned it off. Not doing it for me. Sorry. |
That’s my issue with her latest albums. I listened to the first song and liked it. Then I kept listening and realized they all sound the same. If I listen to a Beatles or Radiohead album, I’ll get variety from song to song. I don’t feel like I get that sort of rhythmic and sonic variety from her albums, especially lately. |
You didn't feel the obvious sarcasm when PP posted that song, really? A song about her sweater. ?? |
Taylor releases some of her worst songs as singles. It’s totally understandable that someone would dislike her music if only exposed to radio singles. I also think people who are older are less open to newer music. I love 80s/90s music because it reminds me of my youth but songs within an artists’s catalog sounded similar back then too. |
You think Shake it off and Peter sound the same? |
Haha was that sarcasm? Given how mystifying the Taylor Swift phenomenon is to me to begin with, I can’t tell! Also, that video had a ton of views and fawning comments from Swifties so I guess someone thinks it is a masterpiece? |
