Illegal drugs were not suspected. That's just the process for the preliminary tox screen, followed by the more in-depth one. He had a number of prescription drugs on hand. The likely culprit, some mix that wasn't good with heat and possible dehydration.

There didn’t need to be any drug interaction or action to cause his death.

A middle aged man with a weakened heart, fresh off a fatiguing two hour pickle ball session, enters a hot tub which has the known effect of causing lowered blood pressure and increased heart rate. A hot tub mixed with dehydrated body (two hours working out) and weakened addict heart is a clear recipe for cardiac arrest and drowning.

As I type this I’m sick at heart that this is, of course, the big question and obsession of so many people right now. Personally I hope he was sober but I’m sure he has some therapeutic levels of various stuff and some people will see that as the reason even if not.

I just wish he had been careful about his recovering body and using the tub. He should have always had his assistant or some other person in attendance while using the tub.

I hope some of the middle aged people with possible heart disease (many of us have some degree of it by midlife without even knowing it) reading about his death will reconsider using their own tubs solo because this is not a rare occurrence, it is very easy to pass out from the cardiovascular effects of hot tub immersion and then drowning is very easy from there.

That’s what you’re focusing on in my post?

It’s cardio exercise even if not very taxing.

But even if you took it out of the equation: Go look up the dangers of hot tubs on those with weakened cardiovascular systems. Heck even healthy people can pass out in the hot tub and that can result in drowning when there is nobody around to pull you out and revive you.

DP- I can tell you the people that play in the advanced league at our club are getting a good cardio workout. If you have a weakened heart from decades of drug abuse, it doesn't take much to get your heart rate up. e.g. like seeing a very out of shape obese person trying to walk up flights of stairs.

Yeah, and how long did you spend on ECMO? He was lucky to be alive given what his heart had already been through.

MP was a competitive tennis player in his youth in Canada. He was in no shape to be playing tennis!

+1 my very fit DH went straight from a run to a shower to a long soak in very hot water in our bathtub over winter break last year, without, as it turns out, drinking any water post-run. I will be forever thankful that DS was walking through in search of deodorant just as DH was stepping out of the tub. DH fainted and would have cracked his head on the tile if DS hadn’t caught him. He was completely out for 90 seconds and DS thought he was dead. He revived after we were able to get some water in him, but it could have been tragic. DH remembers none of it.

I loved Friends and I loved Matthew Perry's character. I read his book as soon as it came out, and it made me sad for him. After reading that book, I was not surprised at all when he died. I'm not sure how anyone could be surprised after hearing about the 15 stints in rehab, etc. His addiction started long before the pain killers...he started drinking very young and immediately liked it way too much.
