*cough*. Latinos like it too. They make up the second largest racial cohort in California. But you would know that if you weren’t a racist. |
Google the graduation rate for Black Americans attending Harvard University. Harvard is not scraping the bottom of the barrel to find qualified black applicants who won't succeed. Your ignorance is loud and disturbing. |
+1 PP here. Definitely a possibility. ![]() |
I wonder what will happen if/when whites at the Ivy Leagues start feeling that they are being edged out by Asians in regard to admissions. |
This is one of about a hundred bad effects of federalism. We let state and local governments run public education and they historically discriminated in housing, education, and every other damn thing. Affluent neighborhoods that have the best schools also generally had covenants against Black home ownership. White flight was all about creating white suburbs with white schools. The business establishment put their money and influence into funding suburbs and suburban public schools and private schools for rich city kids and abandoned support for public schools in majority-Black areas. The private schools were not all white, they skimmed off the top Black athletes and a few well-connected Black students. That set up a cycle in which the Black students who do well despite the odds are encouraged and incentivized to leave the Black neighborhoods and Black schools for suburbs or privates. So those schools and neighborhoods do not get any of the benefits of their successes. |
They will try to do a Barbrand? And the lawsuits will continue. |
Yep. I hope they do post that on their non-anonymous accounts. They obvious don’t think they are racist so why not? |
If the admission system is race-blind and based on demonstrated academic achievement, I will “start feeling” (as you put it) the system is finally fair. If my white child is not admitted, I will assume other students simply demonstrated superior academic performance. And that would be fair. Fine with it. |
What is a "Barbrand"? |
DP. That respondent obviously meant to write “Brabrand” - as in Dr Brabrand, the former FFX superintendent who lead the alterations to the TJ admissions policy because TJ’s prior admissions lead to 80% Asian student body. |
I'm black American and a product of affirmative action. I was chosen for my potential not because of my test scores. I am forever grateful for the opportunity. That said, I have no problem with the ruling. Race should not be a deciding factor. We are focusing on the wrong damn thing - Asian parents and kids are not the problem! Harvard's race-based discrimination was a solution to a problem that has nothing to do with Harvard. We are deflecting away from the fact that there are systemic inequalities in our public school systems that make it hard for most kids (regardless of skin color!) to succeed. Asians (and other groups - Nigerians) succeed because they've figured out that you can't rely on the shi**y school systems to prepare their kids for higher education and life. It's not a damn mystery why they are successful. We are crabs in a barrel fighting to escape while pulling each other down.
Ps. Stop peddling racist stereotypes that Asians have no personality! |
Here’s the thing…
What makes Harvard so extraordinary? Sure it’s a wonderful school and your student will definitely get a good education, but why are people so obsessed with getting into HYP? It’s about the future connections. It might not pan out for every student, but it’s worth it for more than a few. Lots of snide comments about “legacy” admits, but let’s get real. Those are the exact kids you are hoping to form a bond. It’s those interpersonal relationships that pay off in the end. I suspect that if the gate keepers children aren’t given their due, the gates will move elsewhere. It’s a club and you ain’t in it. |
Thanks, PP. I hadn't followed the TJ admissions process issue at all but just read up on it. Now I understand. |
You think Asians are suddenly going to be top lax and squash players? |
