That’s a fairly narrow set of people; ruling impact well beyond this

Well, that’s the aspect of it I always had the most problem with.

It’s because you’re ignorant of history. Sad.

Ha! So are you! Lots of German Nazi sympathizers moved to Mexico and Argentina and now their descendants are classified as “Latinos.”

I'm one of those Democrats who is happy to see this ruling. I'd rather see affirmative action on the basis of socioeconomic status rather than race. It would probably get you to the same conclusion rather than giving preferential treatment to UMC and UC POCs.

It doesn't get you there. California has already proven that. As a black woman, I am devasted. How do you eliminate affirmative action when merit is not real. You have many black and latino students graduated from substandard schools and white kids going to high school with golf courses. SAT scores are based on income, not intelligence.

We haven't even come to terms with race in this country.

No, and we probably never will. Sorry, people are too concerned about their own and their kids' futures to willingly give up their own standing in this "dog-eat-dog" of a country. We kind of tried to help for a while. But rising inequality and the costs of securing a decent future since the 1980s in this meritocratic society has made us much less trusting, much more polarized and with fewer safety nets to fall back on. It's every person for himself even if we're starting from radically different starting points.

And you apparently haven't come to terms with class. There are a TON of poor and lower income whites in this country. You really need to get out more.

As a poor white trash kid, I had zero problems getting into college. I had problems paying for it. But you also want to ban student loan forgiveness. Ergo only rich whites and Asian kids will be in school.

I think if it was just for AA, people would have less of an issue with it. I’m Asian btw

This.

These universities will just adjust there admissions criteria to eliminate the things that preference rich white, Asian, Latino applicants. They already eliminated standardized tests. They want a diverse class and they will figure out a way to get it.

Their* admissions criteria

OK, now do legacy admissions.

Pay attention to student zip codes who apply, the racial make up of the HS they attend, read the essays for clues as to the students race/ethnicity, etc.

That still using race.

Lawsuits will fly.

But that is much harder to prove. They are allowed to aim for geographical diversity, so using zip codes should be fine. How can you prove that because I mentioned race in my personal essay that that is why I was admitted? It’s a harder criteria to prove.

How do you prove why this or that student was admitted? The university can't use race but they can use lots of other factors

I agree. I think affirmative action based on race might not have caused as much controversy.

So the military academics don't have to follow the law. Cool, cool.

And they aren't prima facia discriminated against.
