Wilson / Jackson-Reed Teacher saying slurs

Anonymous
This teacher is a good man. He was called a f-ing (F word - homophobic slur & to suck private parts). This particular student has told this teacher and his co-teacher to “F off” all semester. He is teaching and being videotaped. I hope you volunteer to be in the classroom. We have fifteen calendar days and we have been serving your children. Walk a mile in his shoes.
Expel the kid. Give teacher a paid time off to cool off

How was he wrong for saying it? The kid said “You’re an n-word.” He replied “I’m not an n-word.”
Because White people should never say that word. Ever. It does not matter the context.

This is controversial but there shouldn’t be taboo words. There should be education and social ostracism for using that language. But pushing things underground makes them more dangerous and putrid. Take neo-Nazis in Europe in places where all that stuff was forbidden.

It's intolerable the behaviors teachers are supposed to deal with and the abuse they are expected to take. If DCPS takes action against this teacher--who my child tells me is widely regarded as one of the nicest teachers in the school and a teacher who never misses class--I really hope the teacher has legal action he can take against the city, school district, school, administrators, abusive, harassing student, and student who filmed and posted.

The teacher did nothing wrong. He repeated what that trash student said. If you have a problem with the word, take it up with that student, or his parents, who clearly have not raised a decent human being. The school should suspend him immediately

LOL! "Mom! He said it first!"

I'm sorry he's an adult, he doesn't need to entertain that. And calling a student, a child trash? You never need to be a parent.

The teacher did not deserve that mess but as a professional and adult, no need to stoop down to that level.

My child has told me that this student regularly calls this teacher "fag" in class -- that kid should have been expelled by now.

This poor teacher. I cannot believe he has had to put up with this shit.

While agree, the teacher is a fully formed adult. How about the other gay kids in the class who hear this regularly? If one of them breaks down and commits an act of violence will all of you social justice warriors who are so adamant that kids not be suspended or face real consequences be willing to own your culpability in creating an environment where someone felt regularly attacked and dehumanized and acted out accordingly?

...who here is adamant that the kids not be suspended or face consequences?

I have posted that I am against “in home” suspension. Kids who are in trouble and cannot behave should have in school suspension where they work with a therapist. A lot of the issues teen have is with impulse control and perspective taking.

Is there a Tourette's epidemic?

Y'all give your kids too little credit. They know what they are doing and are intentionally pushing boundaries. The only way to stop that is to set actual boundaries.

No one has said it should be illegal for white people to use the word. Actually, the very consequence you’re proposing—social ostracism—for using an unacceptable word is what makes a word taboo.

I agree with most of what you said, but for anyone who speaks current DC English, the teacher definitely DID NOT repeat back what the student said. You can claim to not understand that, but frankly I don’t believe you. This is not complicated.

I respectfully disagree. I am a teacher in DCPS and have lived here for many years. Today I heard a student use the “a” ending of the word for the first time and because of all this realized the difference. If you are white and living in a largely white neighborhood you truly might not have known.

Where can we see the video? This all feels a little remote

If the school takes negative action against this teacher I would gladly sign a petition in his defense. Kowtowing to teen bullies who make the lives of everyone around them miserable because of the uttering of a so-called forbidden word is just absurd. Enough of this madness. No to forgiving deplorable student behavior and the terrible parenting that got them there. No to ruining a good teacher's career. I hope this teacher files suit to any and everyone he can.

Not baiting, but should white people stop purchasing music that "says it"?

Maybe we should all go around saying racial slurs about our own races and normalize it. Then when others repeat our very own words, we can all of us raise bloody hell. Is that really a good idea?

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, and I'm not saying anyone should call anyone the n word, but how about folks maybe tone down the use of it just a little?

In the 50s, every ethnic and cultural community had very colorful and derogatory language for themselves and for those around them. You still hear colorful language with many targets a lot of more in Mexico + Central America/South America--like Hey Chinito" (Chinese): "Hey Gordito" (fatty). They love to call out physical and background traits down there, it's not even considered highly derogotary usually just more like a nickname. In North America/English less common. I do think that you are right that for whatever reason the n-word is the one that survived--you just don't hear the others that much anymore. Is it straddles this weird dichotomy of hyper-normalized/Voldemort?
