The teacher did nothing wrong. He repeated what that trash student said. If you have a problem with the word, take it up with that student, or his parents, who clearly have not raised a decent human being. The school should suspend him immediately

LOL! "Mom! He said it first!"

I'm sorry he's an adult, he doesn't need to entertain that. And calling a student, a child trash? You never need to be a parent.

The teacher did not deserve that mess but as a professional and adult, no need to stoop down to that level.

My child has told me that this student regularly calls this teacher "fag" in class -- that kid should have been expelled by now.

Oh wow, that's just awful. I feel for this teacher who showed remarkable restraint and professionalism. I have an LGBTQIA+ child attending 9th grade at JR in the Fall. Will they be in a safe environment?

I'm sorry, but it really doesn't sound like it! Maybe when Pete Cahall was principal and came out to the kids, but not now. Biggest mistake ever when DCPS fired home "because he couldn't close the achievement gap"

DCPS did not fire Peter Cahall “because he couldn’t close the achievement gap.” They just *said* that’s why.

Why was he fired?

Exactly. That's why I put it in quotations. JR hasn't been a gay friendly environment institutionally for a long while.

I agree with most of what you said, but for anyone who speaks current DC English, the teacher definitely DID NOT repeat back what the student said. You can claim to not understand that, but frankly I don’t believe you. This is not complicated.

It’s kind of scary that they’d fire a principal who was doing a basically good job …

Yep. It is a little Orwellian too...the reasons they give for and not for firing.

As far as I can tell her was the last real 'leader' that Wilson had, too. We sought him out once when some Wilson students were smoking and spitting on our back stoop which was pretty irritating. He immediately knew who they were based on a few distinguishing characteristics and sought them out and spoke with them. Which is exactly what kids this age need--someone who bothers.

Same thing happened at Walls.
Central office does not like principals who are independent thinkers

They definitely do not.

This poor teacher. I cannot believe he has had to put up with this shit.

While agree, the teacher is a fully formed adult. How about the other gay kids in the class who hear this regularly? If one of them breaks down and commits an act of violence will all of you social justice warriors who are so adamant that kids not be suspended or face real consequences be willing to own your culpability in creating an environment where someone felt regularly attacked and dehumanized and acted out accordingly?

You attempt at an hypothetical is misguided. The teacher did not “break down.”

What in the holy hell are you talking about? Learn to read, genius. No one said the teacher broke down. What they said was that the the abuse sufferer by the teacher was likely being internalized by gay kids in the class and that they (the kids) might act out.

I try to be nice, but sometimes DCUM makes it so damn hard.

Any updates? Are the teacher and student back in class, business as usual? Feel so bad for the teacher—really an impossible situation.

...who here is adamant that the kids not be suspended or face consequences?

I have posted that I am against “in home” suspension. Kids who are in trouble and cannot behave should have in school suspension where they work with a therapist. A lot of the issues teen have is with impulse control and perspective taking.

So it sounds like the kid has been an ongoing problem from middle and now high school. He should have been expelled in middle school or sent to a disciplinary school the least. Think of all the teachers and students who have had to deal with this sh*t.

Do non black children get expelled for saying the n**ger?

Wanna bet a non-black student who called a black teacher an n-word wouldn't be back in that class?

Yep. I think you are right.

Ha. You're both definitely not Black, that's for sure.

Couple of things:

1. No sh*t Sherlock! You figured that out all by yourself?
2. Point here is not that the kid saying a racial slur should not be suspended; I believe he should be. The point is that the SJW and woke-warriors are all against suspensions and real consequences in this situation but change the fact pattern a bit and their wokeness meter gets melted down because it isn't clear from the SJW Handbook whether they should hate racism or suspensions more.
