Ok. But at what point will you unmask then? Never? If the CDC says, as it does now, that places like Arlington and DC don’t need to mask, what will convince you?

I am tired of COVID but I am even more tired of dealing with people who think "Never?" is even close to a reasonable guess.

I care about the spread and would like it to be lower -- if masking had continued until the end of March instead of the beginning, I think we might have gotten there.

I care about vaccination rates, and I am bummed that they stalled out.

I care about effective treatments, and I wish we had one.

I care about air quality, and I wish APS had done more on that front.

I don't know when my family will stop masking, because I don't know what is going to happen over the next few weeks. If rates stay low, I'll talk to my kids about whether they think unmasking at school is OK.

Cases are really low right now. 12/100,000 right now. Haven't been this low since November 2020. What's the magic number for you?

Will it feel awkward for you if cases continue to drop anyway?

Cases are low but your data is incorrect. We were below 11.0/100,000 in November 2021. Even last summer in June/July we were 1/100,000.

Where are these case rates from? When I look at CDC's website, they say 93/100k for Arlington County?

People are conflating seven day average new cases per day with seven day total new case numbers.

No. Look at the posted reports above. CDC site says 7 day avg is 93/100k while VDH site says 11/100k.

Yes, that’s the total cases/100k total for 7 days only a day or two behind. 93 divided by 7 = 13.2.

That's still not accurate. If you scroll down on the Arlington County page today, they say that the total cases over the last 7 days 202.

This is what's frustrating... which source is correct? It shouldn't be that difficult to have one source of data that is used consistently.

The CDC covid tracker says that it's for 2/23-3/1. Here are the totals for those days pulled from the VDH site on the Locality page. It matches. You just need to read to figure out where they are getting the data.

23-Feb 17
24-Feb 37
25-Feb 8
26-Feb 46
27-Feb 41
28-Feb 10
1-Mar 43
Total 202

Cases are going to be here the rest of our lives. It's clear some of you plan on masking for the rest of your life - I agree with Ron DeSantis yesterday that masking is "doing nothing". But if you want to do the equivalent of wearing a yellow shirt forever, be my guest.

My familiy is done with masking. My kids are loving being back at APS without masks.

I loved DeSantis's comments yesterday. The forced maskers deserve to be treated with the same respect as they treated us who objected to forced masking - we were shamed and shunned. I will return the favor.

Note that repeated covid infections can inevitably have more severe health effects due to a diminishing pool of naive T cells. https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fimmu.2022.853606/full

So I will stick with a mask for now thanks.

Inevitably? Ma’am. No.

What's interesting to me is that the people who are most eager to demask are the same people who are eager to dismiss the existence of long covid and risk serious illness resulting from infections. Besides immunocompromised people who are extremely vulnerable and kids under 5, these demasked people are next in line for being most vulnerable to serious effects of the disease that will come from repeated infections.

I will just keep my mask on and see what happens with that.

You could just look at the regions of the country that have had their masks off for over a year now. They made the dubious choice to be the guinea pigs. The rest of us may as well use the information.

So you’re gonna pick on kids? At least you’re not the governor of a state who purports to favor small government while wielding his governmental power by criticizing kids for choosing, on their own, what to wear.

Kids under 5 are at less risk than a vaccinated 40 year old.

And the majority of people have already had COVID. It was a cold. You'll be fine snowflake.

Interesting. The only shame I received ever about masking was for wearing a mask.

I guess you felt shamed because the grocery store required one?

DeSantis was horrible! I can’t imagine speaking to a kid that way. - Unmasked teacher

What is it to you? Get over it. Let people be.

"Let people be." I wish the mask supporters would take that same tack with those of us who feel safe enough to take them off now.
