| I can't help but feel a little uncomfortable spending 15k this year on vacations. One part of me says with two young kids, I should be saving more, but another part of me says that traveling is a priority to me and I shouldn't feel guilty. I'm thinking after this year, I should cap our traveling to no more than 10k. Our HHI is between 320-380k depending on the year. How much do you spend on vacation, and what's your hhi? Do you think you spend too much, too little or just right? |
| We probably spend $10k on two vacations a year. Our HHI is less at $280k, but we have significant savings. If you are going into debt, $15k is too much. If you have good savings and it is a priority, $15k is not. That said, where do you stay when you go on vacation? Do you insist on the Ritz when a nice Hilton would do? There are certainly ways to travel without it having to be an over-the-top expense. |
| $4K. We're not big vacationers. |
| $5,000 on two weeks of vacation. Plus maybe another $3-5,000 on long weekends, etc. we only make $150,000 though. At your salary, as long as you are not in debt, and spend reasonably in other areas, your total seems very reasonable. |

We spend about $10K on an overseas spring break trip each year. Then we spend $5k on our share of a week at the beach and a week in the mountains each summer. Some years an extra few thousand on weekend trips.
So about $15-18k per year. HHI is $335K. 3 kids in public school. We love to travel and our goal is to take the kids to a new country each year of their school-aged lives. |
| Another travel lover here. HHI just recently bumped up to $340k. This year, we've spend $8k on travel. I do feel guilty about it, because I also feel like it's money that I should be saving. On the other hand, I love to travel, it is a priority for me and DH, and so we've decided to get it in while we can. We are not forgoing retirement/college saving to do so though, and I assume neither are you on your income OP. So go for it! Tomorrow is not promised. |
| We take one vacation a year and spend around $5k. HHI is $180K. We are kind of homebodies, though. |
| We spend about $15K. The kids will be grown soon, and we can afford it. It does feel like wasting money, but it is our hobby, like other people have boats. |
| We make 220 HHI and we spend about 8k a year on vac. |
|
We make about 90k and spend less than $4k including one major trip for 1-2 weeks (either overseas or west coast), one smaller 5 day trip and a handful of weekends.
We use frequent flyer miles, Priceline and staying with relatives, but I still think it's quite a splurge. |

Probably about 20k? I feel like, if I'm going on vacation, I want to FEEL like I'm on vacation FULLY. So we fly first class after taking a car to the airport, we go to amazing restaurants and spas, ride horses on the beach, etc.
I'm not about to drive 12 hours to sleep on the bedroom floor of a friend's kid's room for a night before going camping in a tent and then staying in a motel on the way back, eating fast food and food from packages and cans. |
| We are homebodies too but take two trips a year -- one to our hometown that generally costs between $1,500-2,500 (we stay in a hotel rather than with family and the difference in cost depends on whether we fly or drive). Then we go to Florida for a week at winter break which costs around $6,000 because the airfare and hotel rates are so high. We also may take a weekend trip for a bar/bat mitzvah or some other occasion. |
You know what, I bet we have more fun camping and staying with relatives, all cousins piled in together. |
Whatever helps you cope. I seriously doubt that. |
| My vacation costs what my DD's camp costs for 2 weeks which is around $3000 and change. I stay with my cousin for one week who owns a home not too far from the beach. I pay for gas/tolls to get to/from camp. I pay for 1-2 meals with my cousin as a "thanks" for letting me stay with her. I buy some souvenirs, etc too. I earn around $60K or so. |
