I'm not about to drive 12 hours to sleep on the bedroom floor of a friend's kid's room for a night before going camping in a tent and then staying in a motel on the way back, eating fast food and food from packages and cans.

You know what, I bet we have more fun camping and staying with relatives, all cousins piled in together.

Whatever helps you cope. I seriously doubt that.

Go on and believe whatever you need to help you justify your needless extravagance. I'm sure money buys you happiness. Go ahead and look down on those who chose to spend their money more wisely.

I have property in St Lucia we go to maybe 3x a year - costs us $2k each time, but we pay nothing for the stay. Other than that one big trip a year at about $8k to $12k.

So I guess $18k. Hhi $300.

That included the rental car, gas, hotel and 2 day park passes. I think we did ok. We went to Cedar Point and paid in installments for 4 months.
We're not loaded so we do what we can.

I'm thankful to have my health, food, shelter and my basic needs covered.

I was thinking it was a lot. We take a few 3 day trips a year and don't spend more than $500 a time.

$300k HHI, trying to stay $5-$10k for annual vacation budget. Affords us 1 full vacation to a beach destination in the tropics (1+ week), 1 shorter domestic vacation (4-5 days), one visit with family and a few long weekends away. This is subsidized with ample frequent flyer and hotel point usage (a lot from DH intensive international work travel).

In all these budgets, are you including travel costs for visiting family at Xmas/Thanksgiving? We spend about $4k right there b/c plane tickets are out.of.sight!

We don't visit family. They live nearby

It all depends on if you have debt and/or what your savings are. We spend $8-10k on vacations a year (HHI 250K) but we are frugal in other ways, max out retirement, 529s, emergency fund, etc. I wouldn't go into debt or do it at the expense of needed savings.

On actual vacations? I don't really count visiting family as a vacation, because, well, it's generally stressful.

This year I spent roughly $1500 and that was our only vacation this year. We are making a trip to see family next week, which cost another $1200, but again, not vacation.

Last year we didn't take a real vacation, but spent $2000 to go to a family reunion and didn't go anywhere else that year.

Our HHI is $220k. I don't enjoy traveling with my young child though because it doesn't seem to suit her disposition well and hasn't gone well the few times we have traveled, so that's why we haven't done much travel in the last 4 years. Before that we would spend closer to $5k on just vacations and another $2500 or so to visit family.

Family is dead.

HHI $240k

We spend about $2k at Spring break, another $4k or so in the summer.

How does anyone take a family of four to Europe for <$10k?
