How much do you spend on vacations/traveling each year

I'm not about to drive 12 hours to sleep on the bedroom floor of a friend's kid's room for a night before going camping in a tent and then staying in a motel on the way back, eating fast food and food from packages and cans.

It feels like there is tons of middle ground here between first class and sleeping on the floor.

We spend about $2k at Spring break, another $4k or so in the summer.

How does anyone take a family of four to Europe for <$10k?

You have friends and friends of friends that you stay with. Of course, you need to make sure that you also offer your place in return.

We do not have friends or family in Europe.

Any other suggestions?

I do this. There are just two of us traveling (me and 9yo DD) so I like to stay with friends whenever possible. We're lucky to have friends in great places so have gone to Switzerland, Brazil and South Africa the past few years. Airfare is the biggest expense but I can usually keep the total cost under $5K. We have an extra bedroom in our DC condo so return the favor often.

I'm not quite that extravagant, but completely agree with your second paragraph.

Travel on airline points, stay with family or friends or use hotel points, minimize restaurant expenses by shopping/cooking when feasible, and choose tourist activities carefully.

what is typical cost for spring break trip (airfare, tickets, hotel, car, and fastpass (which seems crucial for spring break crowds?)) for Orlando theme park week? 3 days at parks. we are looking at 4-5k which seems cray-cray.

Same here, but its 5yo DD and I. We live abroad and have hosted three friends so far in the past year as well as family visits. We travel often to other countries where friends are staying as well. There are also lots of great beaches near us, so we drive away often for long weekends. I use my elite status to bump us to business/first class for pretty cheap. Our biggest expense by far is traveling home and its still relatively cheap (about $1200 for airfare and rental). DD stays with her dad while I stay with friends and family. We spent about 6K the past year, but we travelled a lot! Income was about 105K the past year.

I agree. When I go on vacations I want to be able to eat endangered animals and murder prostitutes without anyone asking any impertinant questions. Cleaning out filthy toilets with a bristle-less toothbrush is not my idea of a vacation.

PP here. I'm not above hopping on the Chinatown bus to NYC and staying in a friends apartment for the weekend. We'll ride or fly coach or first class. I have driven to neighboring countries where friends reside and only paid for gas money and some (not all) meals for 4 days and had nights on the town with friends while the kiddos stay back with one of our nannies. This year's budget is about 3k.

We make 450k a year and spend 4K on one vacation a year.

No, $4-5k sounds exactly right without any food for a family of 4. Disney is nothing but expensive.
