Making smoothies for beginner

Anonymous
I was just given a blender and now I want to become a smoothie person.
I like melon, strawberries, blueberries, and bananas.
I don't have ice.

Can you suggest some smoothie recipes based on the above info? The easier the better. My idea of a fancy dinner is frozen ravioli instead of a pb&j sandwich.

Add oj and plain yogurt to frozen or fresh fruit. Blend. Add a little honey if you want it sweeter. It's that easy.

If you're ready to really go crazy you can experiment with fruit combos and juice flavors.

I've always hated the taste of plain or vanilla yogurt - will it taste like yogurt in the smoothie?
Also, I am REALLY a beginner. Can you provide proportions?

How can you not have ice?

Well, when I moved into this there were no ice cube trays. I never bought any. And this building has VERY old pipes which causes the water to taste and smell awful (I actually feel like showering makes me smell WORSE). I buy bottled water to drink and cook with. But only for foods that absorb the water, like oatmeal or rice, not for foods like pasta.

Try 1 frozen banana 1 cup frozen strawberries and then enough OJ to thin it out and help it blend. I'd start with 1/2 cup and see how it goes. Smoothies aren't really about measuring. You just add what you think would be good and play with the proportions.

I never put ice in my smoothies.

My daily breakfast is 1 cup plain nonfat yogurt + 1 banana + strawberries + blueberries. Sometimes I add kale.
I try to use fresh when possible but resort to frozen in the winter.
It's super creamy and delish.

If you use frozen berries, you don't need ice. Ditto for frozen bananas. Although I wouldn't use both frozen berries AND a frozen banana. PP's 1 banana + 1/2 cup frozen berries plus either yogurt, milk, water, oj, etc., is a good place to start. If you use ripe bananas you shouldn't need to add sweetener. You can also add in some chia seeds, ground flax, a handful of greens, to up the nutrients.

DH makes a peanut butter, chocolate, banana smoothie that's really good. He always eyeballs it. He uses ice, which I prefer not to use.

+ 1 on the frozen fruit if you are not using ice. you can also use a mix, some fresh some frozen. We eyeball it too so no recipes. I love fruit, greek yogurt and a little honey. Yum. Advocado is also great in a fruit smoothie.
You just have to experiment to see what you like.

I always do 1 cup frozen fruit (usually berries or peaches), 1 banana, and enough plain kefir to make it liquidy. Can add a splash of juice or milk if it's too thick. Too tart? Pineapple, fresh or frozen, adds a lot of sweetness.

Other add-ins have nutritive value but add calories and change the texture a bit:

flax seeds or oil
protein powder (I like vanilla whey protein)
psyllium powder (fiber)

Good luck! I'd practice with fruit smoothies before getting into the green ones, but some people LOVE their green smoothies.

Pro tip: A little cherry juice mixed in goes a long way. Also, frozen fruit helps chill and no ice necessary.

my favorite:

big handful of frozen mango + 1 banana + a few big spoonfuls of plain greek yogurt + a spoonful of almond butter + enough milk to make it drinkable

sometimes I also add frozen blueberries and leave out the almond butter. the banana and mango are key for making it sweet.

if you don't like plain or vanilla yogurt use any yogurt you like.

milk+fruit(1 cup)+yogurt (maybe a splash of oj)
sprinkle granola on top... you sound young and skinny. that was a joke... granola is high in fat and sugar but is awesome on top if you are not trying to lose weight.

Smoothies are good for all shapes and sizes... I use plain non-fat yogurt and fat free milk... well because I need too. My kids get high fat yogurt and whole milk.

You can also make yourself frappuccino if you ever work out the ice issue.

I like about a cup and a half of trader joe's very cherry berry blend or whatever it is called (frozen berries and cherries), plus a single serve chocolate raspberry Greek yogurt and a little bit of hot water to melt the berries enough for the cheapo blender I have to do it's job.

lately I've been putting thawed frozen mango, banana, half an avocado, a decent pour of coconut milk, and a fistful of spinach in the hand blender. delicious!
