College and University Discussion
I recommend them highly. My DC and I went early on (maybe junior year). It really impacted the direction of our search. NOT because they were pushing their own schools, but because they advocate an approach/philosophy that is very healthy. They explain "fit" and why it matters. They recommend against kids competing with their friends in the search process. They give tips on how to minimize parent-child tension along the way. I really do recommend that you attend, and try to get your child to sit in as well. It set a great tone for our search, and my DC was very successful. |
I looked at their tour schedule on their webpage. Doesn't look like they are coming to the DC area. Will the eventually do another tour and come to the DC area? |
They're basically trying to sooth your ego over the fact that an elite college isn’t in the cards for your kid and are hoping that in the end the subtle sales pitch has you applying to one or more of their overpriced schools. |
Not sure, it was arranged by our public high school's PTSA. They do have online talks, though I do not know if their content is the same. |
Depends on what you mean by overpriced. They’re no more expensive than state schools for most kids. |
There were a couple of CTCLs on DC's list that would have likely been cheaper than going to UVA/W&M for us. |
Ha ha maybe but none of them even approaches the same league as these schools so you get what you pay for. Nobody is turning down UVA for a silly CTCL school. |
Why are you like this? Did you not get enough cuddles as a child? |
Do you ever get tired of this? Do you have a job? |
Maybe, but there a lot fewer pretentious assholes like you at CTCL schools. |
Well, if our kid hadn't gotten into UVA or W&M (and it was a razor's edge chance for both so this was a real consideration), there were several excellent options for his tastes/goals among those on the CTCL list. They seemed a better option with merit aid and ranked in the 40's-60's with similar career/grad school outcomes than pay near full price at other privates that were targets (e.g., Oberlin, Lafayette, Skidmore), and others in the upper 20s-30s rankings that he would likely get into but not qualify for merit aid. He wasn't interested in other in-state publics and preferred liberal arts colleges. |
| CTCL is a weird marketing org, not anything official like NESCAC or AAU or even Ivy League/Big Ten/SEC etc. It’s not actually a real thing in academia and you will be laughed at if you seriously try to hawk it as such. |
Dummy said what? Nobody's claiming it's an athletic conference, bruh. Sit down. |
Bruh, sit down and stop shilling your dumb marketing exercise that no one cares about. If you went to an LAC, just say you went to an LAC, since that term actually means something. |
|
I marvel at the posters who think there is only one anti-CTCL poster on this thread. There isn’t. I haven’t been here all day.
DC applied to a couple of CTCL schools as safeties. Of course DC didn’t know they were on the stupid CTCL list at the time. Once DC got into William & Mary the CTCL schools were immediately pushed aside obviously. Yes, they threw out big offers of merit aid but no thanks. In the end it came down to a choice between three top 12 LACs and William & Mary. DD went with one of the LACs and loved it. |
