CTCL schools

Either they didn’t perform a at the level needed to get admitted to better schools, or being in academia you couldn’t afford the tuition and chased the money. And that’s fine. Not special, just fine.

But what does it matter? Why do you feel a need to respond here? What happened in your life that you need to punch down? That's all this - punching down on anonymous kids.

I'm the poster in academia whose kid applied to several CTCL schools but didn't go. Got into UVA & W&M so money was less of an issue and it was the kid's choice. Had they wanted to go to a more expensive LAC money would be an issue, though we might have gotten FA. But I loved a few of the schools on the CTCL list for my kid. I didn't think they were special because they were on that list, but I found them through the list. PhD placement was stronger at the CTCL schools in my kid's intended major than for the LACs in the 20-30 range they were also considering (and also better per capita than UVA or W&M--though it's not quite a fair comparison).
So I recommend the list to others. Maybe having gone to highly selective/prestigious colleges my whole life I just don't think they are that special? I looked at the faculty at the LACs and thought they were high quality and thought it would be great if my kid could work with them for their whole undergrad career. I honestly think there are several schools on that list that are excellent options not just "fine" but not "special" because they are a CTCL. Just the list helped me find really good schools I wouldn't have otherwise known about. I think top students do especially well at them as they get so many opportunities.

Yet your kid got into UVA and W&M and went there instead. So your praise for CTCL rings completely hallow.

Thanks, PP, for actually providing useful information.

But what does it matter? Why do you feel a need to respond here? What happened in your life that you need to punch down? That's all this - punching down on anonymous kids.

Parents. Not kids.

Eh, it is punching down on kids - "underachievers," "not special" - the point is clear. If your DC is not admitted to a T20 school, they are not special. Or your parents are poor, so they had to chase money, so you're not special.

Sad and ugly.

You are delusional. This thread is huge because it's like watching a gigantic trainwreck, of which you (or, the two of you) were the main driver.

You've seriously got to stop with this. It's embarrassing for you. I can assure you, the vast majority of people think this whole "CTCL" thing is a joke. Seriously, it's not a thing in academia and will get you laughed out the door if you try to act like it is in a room full of academics.

So why do you post? Seriously, if this is a joke, why do you post?

Are you in academia? In LAC academia? In the Midwest and South? Because if you are, then you will know that there are many regional groupings where college leaders and academics who straddle that area are familiar with their peer schools. The academics may not know the CTCL term, but they know their peers and wouldn't be surprised that there is a consortium.

CTCL is not a consortium... it's a marketing exercise based on a book. It makes about sense as seriously claiming you're a Gryffindor and then getting really offended when people remind you that Harry Potter is a fantasy.

A lot of ways we organize our lives we...read about in books. And isn't that what happens in college - students read books and learn about life? Finally, your example really doesn't hold water: there is a book about CTCLs and they hold online program for parents/students, so no one gets offended as CTCL isn't a fantasy.

How many CTCL boosters on this thread have their kids in non-public high schools? Taking a poll . . .
