| OMG this is a ridiculous discussion. The Universities are very different in characteristics and in different parts of the country. Worth will be in the fit in terms of the student preference and what a family can afford. If money is not a primary consideration, most parents will weigh heavily what would suit their kid. |
It's been in the school newspaper twice - talk about thirsty. Not exactly the confident HYPS peer they like to posture as on college message boards.

I know several genuinely rich who turned Chicago to send their children to UVA. Chicago has little brand appeal at the undergrad level (well, outside of tiger mom strivers obsessed with rankings magazines and college admissions forums). |
Rich doesn’t equal smart. |
Hmm, I wonder how many times Stanford’s paper mentioned Chelsea Clinton was coming or The Crimson mentioned Malia Obama would join the class of 2021. I’m guessing the answer is at least twice. |

Eighteen Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students have been named winners of 2018 Merit Scholarship awards by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The students are part of a group of more than 3,500 National Merit® finalists chosen to receive scholarships financed by higher education institutions. Each award provides between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study https://www.fcps.edu/news/eighteen-students-named-winners-2018-college-sponsored-merit-scholarships
Interesting that 6 of the 18 chose to attend UChicago - 1 each from Langley and Woodson and 4 from TJHSST |
| PP - chose Chicago over what other colleges? Not all colleges offer National Merit Scholarships. If the students needed the scholarship money - perhaps they made their choice from a very limited pool... |
Relatively few top colleges and universities give out COLLEGE sponsored National Merit scholarships (USC, UT, UChicago). The $2k/yr that UChicago gives is a drop in the bucket of the $75k/yr cost to attend so I don't think the NM Scholarship is a major factor in the decision to attend. UChicago's reputation among HS kids in Northern VA is that it's a top 10 college that draws a similar demographic of applicants as the Ivys. I know that one of these 6 kids chose it over a couple Ivys. |
You sound like a real gem. |
Who would obsess over something so weird and obscure...outside of a tiger parent living through their BRILLIANT kid? You gotta be the same nut studying Andover matriculation list. Uchi loses cross-admit battles against every ivy, mit, stanford, duke berkeley and uva. It's a top 15 college with low brand power at the undergrad level. it's medical school is sh*tshow. very strong grad programs, very strong law and mba (booth). and the endowment is small. |
Don't embarrass yourself. When Data is clearly presented that disproves your stupid ramblings you fall back on your ad hominem attacks. You must be the same Duke booster who can't stand the fact that Chicago now is coveted more at the Nation's top prep schools leaving Duke in the dust. |
Hahaha. This must just kill the Duke idiot. To know that at a prestigious and wealthy prep school like Andover, Chicago's yield of students is more than 3 times that of Duke. All that nonsense about rich pretty kids at Duke and striver nerds at Chicago blown out of the water with unrefutable data that for the last three years Chicago is among the top four college destinations at Andover and Duke is nowhere close..... That must hurt... |
I don't remember anyone from my graduating class (or the kids I knew in the classes before and after mine) wanting to apply to Duke; however, UChicago was fairly popular. TBH, my classmates and I would've considered going to Duke fine, but nothing to write home about. There was a sense that the kids going to UChicago were particularly intellectually serious and driven. It was similar to the kids going to MIT or CalTech. There's an intensity about UChicago. I'm not saying it's 100% true; I'm just commenting on the prevailing sense among the kids I knew. - Andover alum |
Lol. Sounds like another VT grad that didn't get into UVA. Both are great schools with very different experiences. The decision is very child dependent (what is a better fit for your child's personality). For me, it would be tough to turn away from the great deal UVA is in-state. It's like being given a choice between the porterhouse and the double filet but on is on sale for half price. |
