Eighteen Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students have been named winners of 2018 Merit Scholarship awards by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The students are part of a group of more than 3,500 National Merit® finalists chosen to receive scholarships financed by higher education institutions. Each award provides between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study https://www.fcps.edu/news/eighteen-students-named-winners-2018-college-sponsored-merit-scholarships Interesting that 6 of the 18 chose to attend UChicago - 1 each from Langley and Woodson and 4 from TJHSST
Relatively few top colleges and universities give out COLLEGE sponsored National Merit scholarships (USC, UT, UChicago). The $2k/yr that UChicago gives is a drop in the bucket of the $75k/yr cost to attend so I don't think the NM Scholarship is a major factor in the decision to attend. UChicago's reputation among HS kids in Northern VA is that it's a top 10 college that draws a similar demographic of applicants as the Ivys. I know that one of these 6 kids chose it over a couple Ivys.
