I’m responding to someone who said they won’t touch Social Security because boomers have so much political power. Reality check: maybe they have the numbers. And maybe they vote. But they only have political power with regard to saving social security if they use it. Which they don’t seem to be. |
Beginning 4/1, you can no longer apply for social security using tele-service, which is an incredibly popular and efficient way to apply. You must create an id.me account and do a double authentication process on a computer (and seniors are not always a tech savvy group and many don’t even have laptops or smart phones). And if you don’t have a computer, or the tech savvy, or the right forms or documents to set up and use I’d.me, you can no longer apply for benefits using tele-service. You must apply in person. After making an appointment. 2 months appt. And in rural areas driving 2-3 hours each way. Because every senior has car, and the license and the ability to make that drive or have someone take them. And then sit for hours and wait because SSA is about to be flooded. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/03/18/social-security-musk-trump-doge/ And the Boomers are shrugging and letting it happen. Politically powerful my a**. |
He made the big announcement that all of SSA is DOGE so is locked out per the PI yesterday and then ... nothing. (This is from /fednews.) |
Unfortunately the Republican boomers don't seem to care. Their kids are going to care soon, when they have to take a day off from work to drive meemaw to the SS office. |
Of course "the Republican boomers" care, just like the democrat boomers and the independent boomers. And non-boomers. The current guy at SSA is Acting. Let's see what the confirmed guy says - and if this policy goes into effect as stated on 3/18, literally 6 days after they said they weren't gong to do it on 3/12. Like everything else in this administration, it is all subject to change. |
Maybe check real news and not reddit? Because he issued a statement saying that he was consulting with DOHJ and SSA attorneys about whether to shut the agency down. And he made this statement to day. SRR link to WaPo (gift link) above. |
Here’s Trump’s Commerce Secretary saying that if you complain about not getting your SS check, you’re a “fraudster”. These people are comic book villain evil. The worst people.

Bloomberg broke the story late yesterday. As for consulting with DOJ... https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-03-20/social-security-says-doge-ruling-could-force-agency-to-shut-down?leadSource=reddit_wall |
You forgot to add they are also shutting down a bunch of the offices where people are supposed to go for these in person visits. |
I work for SSA. The “current guy” is acting— on the orders of DOGE and Musk. He was a nonsupervisory GS15 who was about to be fired and possible prosecuted for leaking PII to DOGE when he jumped over 100+ people above him on the org chart and was awarded the job because he had been loyal to DOGE. And as things blow up and break down at SSA, he is literally sending all staff emails saying that he had to do whatever stupid thing he did because DOGE told him to do it. Not his fault. (That is when people with morals resign, BTW— when ordered to do something harmful, illegal or immoral). The current guy is a stool pigeon who hopes to find a soft landing in MAGA world when his tenure is over. Musk is calling the shots. Which does lead one to believe that the confirmed political will also have to let Elon call the shots, if he wants to keep his job. I expect the new guy to be more polished and better at appearances. The current guy is a mouth breathing loser with no actual management experience. But, no one at SSA expects actual policy changes or for him to push back at Musk. It’s highly unusual for an acting to dismantle an agency to this degree. If the decisions that have been made weren’t endorsed/encouraged/directed by the Trump Admin, he would have been fired, like the actually competent SES Michele King was, when she refused to give DOGE access to the most sensitive SSA systems. |
And firing 7000 employees while dealing with the influx of in person claims. |
They are different things. On 3/12, they threatened to do away with all teleservice. On 3/18, they narrowed it to changing deposit info and new claims. That is definately going ahead. According to my training schedule. DOGE wants it. It’s happening. And will be in place before the new guy gets a full senate vote. Although his confirmation hearing should be interesting after today. |
Wow, what an out of touch a-hole. Of course his mother wouldn’t complain. She’s rich! She doesn’t need her SS check. Apparently he thinks that all seniors are swimming in cash |
Plus, he’s not at all subtly threatening seniors. When their check doesn’t arrive, they will be labeled/ investigated as potential fraudsters if they complain, or do anything except calmly hope that maybe they get their money next month. |
Last year I was POA for a family member in nursing care who was paycheck-to-paycheck. If SS were a month late, no one would be quietly sitting by. The caregiver calling me the minute a check doesn't clear is not evidence of fraud. |
