Hard disagree. Are you aware of how much power older people have in our political system? Stop trying to sow fear and undermine government.

Musk just eliminated a bunch of regional and field offices. And senior did almost nothing.

He eliminated tele-service, which will send an extra 85,000 people a week to SSA offices— in some case 150+ miles away after the FO closures. While at the same time cutting 7000 employees. Right now, the wait is 4-6 weeks for an appointment and many offices are double scheduled and run hours behind. If you add 85,000 people a week and cut staff, what do you think the wait time for an appointment will be by June? Not to mention people too frail to go into an office, people who have serious mental illnesses like erratic schizophrenics and nonverbal 7 year olds with autism, moms with newborns, the immunocompromised, institutionalized or hospitalized. People undergoing daily chemo following extensive abdominal surgery to remove metastatic cancer (immunocompromised, in significant pain and can’t miss a day of chemo to sit in a field office 2 hours away for 3-4 hours because staff is overwhelmed). If they can’t file online (and this is not tech savvy demographic and many seniors don’t have involved kids to help). Too bad, so sad.. Even though actual auditors found almost nothing fraud in the tele-system, which worked well and was not broken.

And yet, the seniors did almost nothing about the elimination of teleservice and the changes are happening in a week.

Now Elmo is taking monthly benefits hostage. And this guy has shown a willingness to shoot hostages. And even if he doesn’t shut them down this time, they are a great hostage. There will be a next time. And it certainly doesn’t look like seniors are doing anything.

Boomers assume that because they are a powerful group, the government will give them what they want without them doing anything except voting. What’s new here Elmo and FOGE are very willing to hurt Republican demographics— many changes, like to SSA (which rely much more heavily of SDI/SSID), department of Ag, USAID (which buys from farmers), tarriffs, Medicaid cuts— harm red states and MAGA demos as much or more than blue states. Seniors, farmers, small businesses, and people just trying to put food on the table are all taking a beating. And Elmo doesn’t care, because Elmo and Trump and the oligarch class have a financial interest in seeing social security fail.

So when, exactly, are Boomers going to get off their demographically privileged a**es and exercise this power yo think they have? Because a lot of damage has already been done. And an enormous amount of damage to the system will be done to SSA by 2026. And much of what Musk is doing cannot simply be undone. By the time the system is so broken that checks are actually not deposited (which is coming as they push the only people who understand 1970s computer payment systems into retirement), there isn’t a fast or easy fix and the people who actually understand the system are gone. It would take years to recover and a large budget increase to get the people needed (and an average of 2-3 years on intensive mentoring and trading for them to understand SSA regulations and systems). So, they will privatize and the people who run the program will have a financial incentive to delay and deny claims, and will take a nice fee off the top for their troubles.

SSA administers its programs while spending less than 1% of benefits on staffing and overhead. And has an error rate well below 1%. It’s an enormous program that is actually well run. You think a for profit company will do that?

The Boomers are too busy watching Fox News, worrying about trans people in bathrooms (spoiler alert— if 1% of people are trans, them you regularly have trans people in public restrooms with you. You just aren't aware because they look female and we hope you aren’t staring ant their genitalia through a crack in the stall— which would make you the pervert, not them) and golfing to be bothered with exercising their power. Because they are entitled and lazy and have never had to do anything but bite in large numbers. And everyday the do nothing, they lose more and more power.

FAFO

Oh just STOP with this stupid Boomer bashing. I'm a Boomer, don't watch Fox news, absolutely DESPISE Trump and Musk, could care less where the hell Trans people piss or shit, I still work 50 hours a week running my own company where I emply 160 Gen Xs, Millenials, and Gen Zs, I don't golf, and I am totally infuriated over the complete and utter destruction of our country. Never in my entire life would I have thought that in 2025 we would be living in this dystopian reality. I come from working-class immigrants who were all Democrats. Now I wake up on a daily basis and try to figure out how the hell we can fight this with the stupid Dems dead in the water and powerless.

And how dare you call 76 million people entitled and lazy. You have no idea what we all have lived through.

I’m responding to someone who said they won’t touch Social Security because boomers have so much political power. Reality check: maybe they have the numbers. And maybe they vote. But they only have political power with regard to saving social security if they use it. Which they don’t seem to be.

Beginning 4/1, you can no longer apply for social security using tele-service, which is an incredibly popular and efficient way to apply. You must create an id.me account and do a double authentication process on a computer (and seniors are not always a tech savvy group and many don’t even have laptops or smart phones). And if you don’t have a computer, or the tech savvy, or the right forms or documents to set up and use I’d.me, you can no longer apply for benefits using tele-service. You must apply in person. After making an appointment. 2 months appt. And in rural areas driving 2-3 hours each way. Because every senior has car, and the license and the ability to make that drive or have someone take them. And then sit for hours and wait because SSA is about to be flooded.

Of course "the Republican boomers" care, just like the democrat boomers and the independent boomers. And non-boomers.

The current guy at SSA is Acting. Let's see what the confirmed guy says - and if this policy goes into effect as stated on 3/18, literally 6 days after they said they weren't gong to do it on 3/12. Like everything else in this administration, it is all subject to change.

And the Boomers are shrugging and letting it happen. Politically powerful my a**.

Unfortunately the Republican boomers don't seem to care. Their kids are going to care soon, when they have to take a day off from work to drive meemaw to the SS office.

I work for SSA. The “current guy” is acting— on the orders of DOGE and Musk. He was a nonsupervisory GS15 who was about to be fired and possible prosecuted for leaking PII to DOGE when he jumped over 100+ people above him on the org chart and was awarded the job because he had been loyal to DOGE. And as things blow up and break down at SSA, he is literally sending all staff emails saying that he had to do whatever stupid thing he did because DOGE told him to do it. Not his fault. (That is when people with morals resign, BTW— when ordered to do something harmful, illegal or immoral). The current guy is a stool pigeon who hopes to find a soft landing in MAGA world when his tenure is over. Musk is calling the shots. Which does lead one to believe that the confirmed political will also have to let Elon call the shots, if he wants to keep his job.

I expect the new guy to be more polished and better at appearances. The current guy is a mouth breathing loser with no actual management experience. But, no one at SSA expects actual policy changes or for him to push back at Musk. It’s highly unusual for an acting to dismantle an agency to this degree. If the decisions that have been made weren’t endorsed/encouraged/directed by the Trump Admin, he would have been fired, like the actually competent SES Michele King was, when she refused to give DOGE access to the most sensitive SSA systems.

Please let us know where you are getting your information from - the last I saw that most tele-services are being left as is and only changes is around changing of direct deposit bank information.

You forgot to add they are also shutting down a bunch of the offices where people are supposed to go for these in person visits.

And firing 7000 employees while dealing with the influx of in person claims.

They are different things. On 3/12, they threatened to do away with all teleservice. On 3/18, they narrowed it to changing deposit info and new claims. That is definately going ahead. According to my training schedule. DOGE wants it. It’s happening. And will be in place before the new guy gets a full senate vote. Although his confirmation hearing should be interesting after today.

Wow, what an out of touch a-hole. Of course his mother wouldn’t complain. She’s rich! She doesn’t need her SS check. Apparently he thinks that all seniors are swimming in cash

Plus, he’s not at all subtly threatening seniors. When their check doesn’t arrive, they will be labeled/ investigated as potential fraudsters if they complain, or do anything except calmly hope that maybe they get their money next month.

Last year I was POA for a family member in nursing care who was paycheck-to-paycheck. If SS were a month late, no one would be quietly sitting by. The caregiver calling me the minute a check doesn't clear is not evidence of fraud.
