You will technically still be entitled to receive it, but you won’t be able to actually be able to apply because the website won’t work, they shut down the phones, and they closed most of the field offices and fired the people who worked there.

Keeping the website up requires few resources. None of the rest are needed in order to apply online, which is what most people do.

I know fiscal conservatives are a dying breed but I’ll say it. Congress needs to go after Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Not the drugged up South African who has no authority to cut SS

And if Congress changed them, then so be it. At least people could contact their representatives. But the problem is this wanna be dictator model which is undermining our democracy.

Apparently they need more since it keeps crashing.

Once you apply online, you still have to go in person to provide documentation. DH applied last week online and was told he must show up with marriage and birth certificates. I don't even know where our marriage certificate is located. Sigh.

we got married in another country though we are US citizens. I could see the Trump admin not accepting the foreign marriage certificate.

DOGE wants to switch the SSA computers off COBOL.

The so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is starting to put together a team to migrate the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) computer systems entirely off one of its oldest programming languages in a matter of months, potentially putting the integrity of the system—and the benefits on which tens of millions of Americans rely—at risk.

The project is being organized by Elon Musk lieutenant Steve Davis, multiple sources who were not given permission to talk to the media tell WIRED, and aims to migrate all SSA systems off COBOL, one of the first common business-oriented programming languages, and onto a more modern replacement like Java within a scheduled tight timeframe of a few months.

Under any circumstances, a migration of this size and scale would be a massive undertaking, experts tell WIRED, but the expedited deadline runs the risk of obstructing payments to the more than 65 million people in the US currently receiving Social Security benefits.

Just like in Haiti. Everyone pays in, and no citizen ever sees the money again.
