I’ve lived in DC, ward 3, since 1985. It’s definitely a lot worse now than 10 years ago, and even since the Barry years. This administration is an abject failure on all fronts. Council, mayor, all of it. I’ve moved from being a renter then to homeowner in CC in late 90s. The crime here has become more than Woodley was in the 80s. We may sell and move.

It is not the media causing panic to know that your neighbor on one side was carjacked at gunpoint in broad daylight, and other neighbors have witnessed shootings and assaults on Connecticut avenue, and having trades people tell you they won’t come to DC because of continuous crime (Chevy chase dc). It’s definitely gotten much worse in ward 3 in the last years. The present council and mayor are the cause. Root causes need to be addressed and solved. Instead of offering $2000 rebate to low income people for e-bikes, and using tax dollars for bike lanes and giving away public land to create “affordable housing” (which OP told me was 20-30 units starting at $80,000 annual income, which hardly addresses poverty), the administration might try social programs spending, after school program spending, making every ward inviting, rather than shunting homeless people off to Connecticut avenue without follow up services. It’s ridiculous.

For those of us who are true city dwellers, DC will be fine. Cities have crime, but crime is also rising in red states as well. When the cost of living goes up, wages go down, poor people will commit crimes to survive because of high inflation. Housing, food and other basic living expenses have increased due to Congress giving your tax money to Ukraine to stop a so called war.

So I’m in DC all of one hour this morning and a bum starts verbally assaulting and then chases people inside a store. And then is eyeing me trying to grab my stuff. And people are all hiding inside. Pathetic state this city is.

The problem is not just a money allocation problem. There is little to no follow-thru on the expenditures. For example, I witnessed a DC jobs initiative for which the phone number to call was disconnected, the emails from job-hopefuls were never answered, and the website was never updated. Leadership means not just allocating money but establishing expectations of excellence and monitoring to ensure they are met over the long haul. That's what is missing here.

Details here re: the shopper who left DC USA in Columbia Heights on Sunday and who was then carjacked and SHOT over a late model Honda. Damn, I remember when it was built, remember talk of Whole Foods being an anchor? This was not even late. I'd say "head on a swivel" but when 3 men come up with a gun WTAF does that help? Hope the victim will recover. So many families in that area, who go to the Target, use that metro, etc. Every week the city seems to spiral lower.

The “head on a swivel” crowd also encourages women to stop wearing such short skirts to avoid harassment.
