As if! As if that’s going to happen.

Think about it. This town is populated with either wealthy or upper middle class intelligent idealistic, but naive folks who embrace urbanism and all its warts. They think a punitive approach to crime is “unfair.” Cracking down puts too many in jail and so they want to work on the “root causes of poverty” rather than enforcement. It’s a sort of patronizing, infantilizing way to view crime. Basically side with the perpetrators over the victims and promulgate ineffective restorative Justice and keep voting in weaklings who justify the status quo by touting selective, “evidence based” policies that make us less safe. Or you have Ward 7 and 8 super poor people who basically don’t like police and enforcement.

Meanwhile Grocery stores leave because of shrinkage, the car jackings continue to skyrocket because obviously criminals know they can get away with anything. and the tax base , you know, people willing to put up with it, slowly get scared and leave.

I arrived in 1991 and spent years fighting and then winning against crime and stupid. This city was a dump and dangerous and then it changed. The drift back to stupid can be checked and it will but only if it’s an all hands on deck effort.

I fear it won't be, because too many people welcome the stupid as progress.

I am one of those who believe “root causes of poverty” rather than enforcement needs to be addressed first. Lots of cities lost people during the pandemic because they realized being locked down in a small apartment for days on end was stifling.

I don't like the idea of the news and media trying to ensure panic.

For those of us who are true city dwellers, DC will be fine. Cities have crime, but crime is also rising in red states as well. When the cost of living goes up, wages go down, poor people will commit crimes to survive because of high inflation. Housing, food and other basic living expenses have increased due to Congress giving your tax money to Ukraine to stop a so called war.

It is not a lie. Read the news, Zelensky is currently in DC attempting to get Congress to pass more money after its already received some $100 million dollars and weapons packaging.

I think the actual war in Ukraine has driven inflation up more than the fact that the U.S. is sending weapons and other aid there. If you've got a problem with the cost of living going up related to Ukraine, maybe take it up with the jerk who invaded Ukraine almost a decade ago and then tried to finish the job last year. This isn't particularly on-topic for a question about quality of life in D.C., though.

I was about to say the same. Idiotic PP thinks we should live with constant crime until we solve poverty and have world peace. Full on moron that has blood on their hands. This attitude is literally killing people to avoid hurting criminal’s feelings.
