Sad to say it, but Chinese communists and authoritarians in Russia maybe have gotten it right - the internet needs vastly more guardrails and maybe the govt needs to seriously think about blocking access to social media. Social media is a cancer that is destroying society. It is being wepaonized by our foreign adversaries agaiant us. Vastly more control over social media isn’t incompatible with democracy. Countries like Britain to Australia ate making it much harder to access social media now, especially for minors.

Democrats have been trying to put rules and guardrails on for years only to be stymied by the libertarians of the right.

More worrying than the possibility of the shooter having an ideological disagreement with Kirk is the possibility that we’ve raised a subset of Gen Z kids who are so shallow and confused that they think random video game memes constitute reality. This is what it comes down to. He didn’t have clear “left” or “right” ideology as older people and people who aren’t terminally online would recognize it.
