| How can I get there? I'm so mortified. |
|
First start with wall pushups, then knee pushups, then standard pushups. Also, of course, reducing your body weight will make pushups easier. You can do various arm/back/chest exercises as well as core exercises (any basic strength training book will give you a decent routine).
So you know, pushups are easier for certain body types--shorter arms, relatively strong upper body, relatively low body weight--all those things make pushups (and chinups/pull ups) easier. But with practice, I think pushups are achieveable for most people who are willing to put in the work. |
| Oh, and one more thing, really it's not embarassing. Don't worry about it, you'll get there! |
| How can that be? I am 228 pounds, take a four hour nap every day, lead a very sedentary lifestyle, eat like total shit, and even I can do a few push-ups. I don't mean this snarkily, just genuinely can't understand how this is possible? |
Are you a man or woman? |
Female. |
Are you sure you are doing a full horizontal plank push up woth no butt in the air? Anyway, as pp said, a lot has to do with body type. You may naturally have better muscle tone in your upper body. My friend is completely out of shapes weighs more than 250 but she is as strong as an ox. She could help move any piece of firniture OP, nothing to be embarrassed about. I can only do 1 then I fall on my face

| Try the 100 push-ups app. I could only do one in the beginning and got up to 100 on the set day by day schedule it lays out. Made a huge difference in my core and posture. |
PP can you give the exact app name? There's several under that search term and a lot of them are scammy. Want to buy a decent one. Thanks! |
| OP, I can't do one either. |
| Try yoga. I found that a good yoga class built up my upper body strength in a gradual but really observable way. Not just planks, but other poses use the upper body and build core strength. |
| You can also try push-ups on the stairs. Seriously. Start with the wall, as PP suggested, then move to the stairs, then to the floor. If you can't do a full push-up, then only go as far as you can with proper posture. Keep working at it and you will get there. Good luck! |
|
You can also do "negatives" to build up your strength. Get up into the plank position and slowly lower yourself down (the down part of the push-up).
Then do the knees-down "women's" push-up for the up, and once you're up, straighten your legs into the plank, again. Repeat as possible. |
Side question: How do you take a 4 hour nap every day? What does your night-time sleep look like? (Serious question!) |
| I'm 130 lbs, active & fit, and I can barely do one full pushup. I have super strong legs, am reasonably strong on the arms, but pushups just kill me. |
