Run when you're 25

I've been working my ass off to get into running and reading stuff like this really helps. It makes me want to keep it up.

OK.

I advocate picking up running and other healthy habits when you're younger because they'll be ingrained by the time you're older and you could feel and look better than your peers who don't exercise. Plus if you have good exercise habits, it might make you less inclined to let yourself go in other ways, like with the diet.

I'm 42, and I'm faster than I was when I was 16... or 26... or 36. Had to stop marathoning after kids, though - my body didn't want to do the distance anymore and the time commitment was daunting.

Running is very hard on women's knees. I swim and play tennis.

No! don't run!

Good thing I'm not planning on being a high mileage runner. I'm happy to get a mile in a day.

Great advice! Save your knees. Your heart, on the other hand...... oh well. At least you won't have knee problems.

Because tennis is renowned for being knee-friendly.

I think she can save her heart and her knees by swimming. I am a "recovered runner." I've run daily since I was 14 (with the exception of two pregnancies) and I'm now done. I basically broke my feet and strained my knees to the point that I will eventually become very arthritic. I'm trying to bike and swim more (although the biking is also tough on my knees) and I'm so sad about having to start over. So, I give credit to the crosstrainers (not to be confused with crossfitters!). I wish I had done more of that when I was younger.

BS!! Not for all of us. I am 44 and I have run 7 marathons. I played competitve soccer for 15 years. I still run outside 6 miles a few times a week combined with bootcamp, spinning and weights.

Not a single knee issue my entire life!! Key--I did quad and hamstring weights--equal amounts since my teens. Stabilizes your knees. I am also only 5'5"--taller women sometimes have more knee issues.

I know this may sound crazy BUT there are other great workouts that aren't tough on the knees.
