I’m a liberal democrat horrified by the current Dr Seuss drama and normalization of censorship

I love seeing the left eating it’s own while at the same time denying they’re doing it, haha!

The Dr. Suess Foundation is eating itself?

and Dr Seuss admitted he was racist earlier in life and apologized for it. He admitted he made mistakes. So his foundation has decided to stop publishing the books he said were a mistake, what's the big deal? The right loves making a big deal about nothing.

Yes they do. Anything that gets their "base" riled up, even if it's over very little.

Reading some background on this, I see a lot of left wing activity on this over the years with the right claiming the left was making a big deal out of nothing to rile up their base.

Indeed. The only thing to take away from this thread is this . . .

GOP is just a bunch of hysterical drama queens.

That’s just rude?

I am a registered Democrat. Maybe you’re right that I’m not on the very farthest of the left at this point, because if this is what they want, I disagree.
But to do away with all potentially hurtful stereotypes portrayed throughout our history of literature and media is a slippery slope. How is this line about Chopsticks more hurtful than all of the “dumb blonde bimbo” tropes. Is Legally Blonde next to be shelved? (I’m trying to be lighthearted, about something that really does scare me for the future).

If you’re scared about the future then maybe the thing used up or be scared about is doing stuff that’s offensive to other people why in the F is that so freaking hard for you to understand that maybe you should think that stereotyping all Chinese people as eating with sticks isn’t a bad thing I don’t care if you’re a Democrat I don’t care if you are the next reincarnation of Obama, Clinton and Lincoln, what are you talk about is just willfully ignorant.

Asian man on Twitter:I’m Asian and this doesn’t offend me lol why is eating with sticks any different than eating with a piece of metal?

White woman: It's not about eating with sticks. It's the drawing. I can't tell you how to represent your community, that's not my place. But I'm offended by that drawing.

17 of the 20 top sellers on Amazon right now are Dr. Seuss books because people think they will all get cancelled soon. But nobody reads that stuff anymore, right?

Somehow I don't think you are the best person to decide what is offensive or not.

The people buying Seuss books did not read one word of one factual account of what is happening and why. It’s sad that so many people are so gullible to manipulation.

There is no factual information in this post. Your sadness over your own speculation seems rather cynical.

It really is funny. This western savior complex is more subtle now than during the era of colonialism but no less misinformed, shallow, and self-centered. I wonder where it comes from. Other societies do not engage in this rather pitiful navel gazing and self-flagellation over children’s books.

I'm a librarian and I removed two Suess books "Mulberry st" and "*If I ran the zoo" due to racist caricatures years ago.

I’m a moderate but I really hate the right at this moment for all their fear-mongering and arm-waving on click Nate topics rather than the important stuff we need to get done.

What is the name for the free market cancelling a beloved cultual icon in accordance with an ideology I don't agree with There is no better word than censoring right now. If the use it enough that way, that becomes the new definition. This happens all the time with other words. Why fight over words? You know what they are talking about.

It’s pretty clear that you and many others on this thread don’t know what they are talking about.

Are you another person who is going to set me straight on what I believe and what words I am allowed to use? When are you going to listen for understanding instead of just confirmation of your biases?

Decisions by private entities are not censorship.

Well they are now. Deal with it. It's going to get worse.

No, they are not. Censorship is a government telling you what you can(or must) and cannot say, and fining or jailing you for disobeying. A company that decides to cease selling love volume publications is not censorship.

+1 and cancel culture is really just a boycott of companies, not censorship or cancelling. Someone unfriending you isn't cancel culture, it's them choosing who they don't want to be friends with because you are a vile human that loves Trump more than you love America.

Was Dr. Suess being boycotted?

No a private firm that owns the rights to his work decided to stop publishing a few of his books that aren’t big sellers and because they explained their decision conservatives went crazy. Had they done this without announcing these same conservatives would never have noticed.

Exactly. They're not very popular titles.

It might be a win win because they win praise from liberals for ceasing publication on racist books but outraged conservatives buy the remaining books.

I checked amazon bestsellers and it looks like no one is panic buying the books that were unpublished just the popular tiltkes. Plus "Go Dog Go" which was not written by Seuss.

That just shows how good people actually have it here, despite what Democrats say
