I’m a liberal democrat horrified by the current Dr Seuss drama and normalization of censorship

It is appalling to me that they are pulling some of Dr. Seuss’s classic children’s books off the shelves because they are potentially offensive. At what point does this cancel culture not become Fahrenheit 451?

I just re-read one of the titles being discontinued, “...Saw it on Mulberry St”, Dr. Seuss’s first children’s book and a wonderful story about imagination. The only potentially offensive line in the whole book is “a Chinese man that eats with sticks”. Is acknowledging that Chinese eat with chopsticks now so offensive that we are banning a book that mentions it? Can any Asians out there please enlighten me and tell me if you’re happy with the choice to remove this classic book from the shelves?

I’m really afraid of what’s going on, and that this kind of move is supported and applauded by the left.

What are you talking about? There is no broad based movement to ban Dr. Suess. There is no "the left" that you speak of.

You're a "liberal Democrat" like I'm the Queen of Sheba. Primarily, you need to learn what exactly censorship is.

Even Dr. Suess was ashamed of his early works, which, yes, exhibited racism by his own admission.

Is the government censoring? If not, then it isn't the censorship you are afraid of.

That’s just rude?

I am a registered Democrat. Maybe you’re right that I’m not on the very farthest of the left at this point, because if this is what they want, I disagree.
But to do away with all potentially hurtful stereotypes portrayed throughout our history of literature and media is a slippery slope. How is this line about Chopsticks more hurtful than all of the “dumb blonde bimbo” tropes. Is Legally Blonde next to be shelved? (I’m trying to be lighthearted, about something that really does scare me for the future).

"Dr. Seuss Enterprises said it made the decision after consulting educators and reviewing its catalog."

Dr. Seuss had a long history of publishing racist and anti-Semitic work, spanning back to the 1920s when he was a student at Dartmouth College. There, Dr. Seuss once drew Black boxers as gorillas and perpetuated Jewish stereotypes by portraying Jewish characters as financially stingy.

Oh, the horror that the people who manage his estate might want to dial back the parts of his work that suck by today's standards. Why can't I just go eat in a Sambo's Restaurant, pour some Aunt Jemima over my pancakes, and read some Dr. Suess depicting black people as gorillas. Damn you liberals!!!

How is it censorship if the Dr Seuss organization has made a decision to stop publishing?

Get your head out of the sand.

No one was censoring anything.

This story has multiple headlines on Fox News. That’s why troll op is glomming on to it.

The Dr. Seuss foundation says it will stop publishing several books due to racist stereotypes. It’s pretty stupid and I think the backlash will be pretty significant. That said, this is not due to the government action but because of people with power listening to an increasingly shrill and insane minority. They don’t seem to have any moral compass of their own so they just follow the Twitterati.

I just read the CNN article. I agree that it's concerning, but ultimately it's up to the publisher which books they want to continue publishing.

If you actually read the title I mentioned, a classic Seuss book, (and not just the article), the only offensive line in there is “and a Chinese man that eats with sticks”. I’m just saying, this is a slippery slope and where does it stop?
