While Biden has picked a good team so far, there seems to be a trend with him picking people who have been in his inner circle already and corporate lobbyists. It would be nice to see him branch out a bit.

He seems to be picking a mix. I suspect with a pick like Kerry, part of the goal is to not have the person doing the negotiating be the story. Except in the addled minds of the Swift Boaters, Kerry was barely even the story when he was running for President.

He's also picking people that can hit the ground running with our allies. People that our allies know and trust and have worked with before.

I find Avril Haines a little surprising for DNI, but she'll be good. I think it's also smart to not elevate DNI beyond what it was supposed to be, which is a major policy and coordination entity for the IC. I think that's been an issue almost since the beginning with DNI. Haines will right the ship in that regard.

I do wonder who the AG, CIA, and FBI picks will be. I think Haspel and Wray may be allowed to carry over until replacements are named. Obviously not so with Bill Barr.

Yeah, DNI is a bit of a traffic cop job. It’s very administrative—or at least it’s supposed to be. She’ll be terrific.

Will be very interesting to see who he picks for D/CIA.

Wray is a ten-year appointment. It would not be normal for Biden to replace him.

Barr and Haspel can leave anytime. Tick tock.

You mean like how his predecessor was fired by Trump via tweet? Comey had another 5 years to go so I’m not sure your point there.

Who’s being floated for HHS?

I’m hoping it’s Fauci.

He’s a mayor.

Not anymore. Will be interesting to see where he lands. I know he was really angling for UN Ambassador.

Uh huh okay. Are you super-surprised a guy with no significant foreign policy experience, degrees, languages or national stature lost that role?

Shouldn’t we get through Covid before we give him a Dept? And I like him, but he is about to turn 80.

Nope. But I’m sure Biden will reward his support with an appointment of some kind. As I said previously, will be interesting to see where he lands.

The most chatter seems to be about Lujan Grisham or Murthy for HHS. Some saying HHS Sec should be Black, with mention of Bass.

I like him a lot, but I'm so glad they didn't make it a political reward a la Hailey. A career diplomat was absolutely the way to go.

With all due respect to Fauci, and I do like him, someone untainted by the Trumpist response and questionable advice (no masks etc) is needed. Quite frankly, I would be open to a Secondment from NZ gov for a Covid response.

Dude, you voted for a billionaire with a golden toilet. Shut up.

Amen!

I cannot work out the direction of the causal relationship that makes Spring Valley so pro-Trump (20% compared to 5% DC). Is it the contempt for any environmental concerns that drives them to the Spring Valley or is the toxins making normal people vote for Trump?
Apologies for being potentially offensive, but Noam said it all about the current state of the GOP regarding climate change response:
'Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?'

Fauci has served under six Presidents faithfully and without censure. He was an excellent public health scientist under Obama and tried to mitigate the disaster that is Trump. I’m not holding that against him - he held the line until Biden could get to us when others faltered and failed.

Republicans’ Covid response too:
Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?

Well, he does have languages.

Yes, Axios says likely Blinken, will not be Rice.

It was never going to be Rice. I don't know how many times that needs to be said.

Is she getting anything in this Administration? Defense is still open. Not much left for someone of Amb. Rice's stature.

What stature? She could only fall from where she started. Her twitter feed alone should be a disqualifying factor for any diplomatic post. Why can people never retire or go into academia? Why are we such a boomerang nation when it comes to the politicians? So much potential in the nation and we keep recycling. Maybe there’s a case for some sort of universal civil service exam followed by assessment center on whether plays well with others.
