My white friends lives in a rural area in Northern CA. She told me that one time there was a knock on their front door, which was open and (obviously) unlocked. It was a cop. He'd been driving by, and saw that their car door was open, so he just wanted to check that everything was okay. She has three kids who are in and out all the time, and the car door being open was a mistake. The front door being unlocked is just ... how they live.

She was like "We had a good laugh about it...." and I just stared at her.

An example of unrecognized privilege. This could have ended differently for a black/brown/Muslim/etc. family.

I guess if you want to see racism in everything, you will.

Carry a stick on a walk or God forbid wave it around in the air when you're a three year old boy, even if you're surrounded by other parents who know it's totally age appropriate to do so.

Use the word "pregnant" even if you're only ten years old and haven't even reached the very beginning of puberty yet. If you're a boy with brown skin who uses the word "pregnant" in a sentence, you must want to impregnate girls and are seen as a sexual predator. As if that were even possible.

Be a 6 year old who runs past a white baby on a play structure meant for a 6 year old (not a baby), especially when the parent of the baby assumes no one will notice her trying to rip him a new one for doing nothing wrong. Sorry, lady, yes I am his mother....

Ask the mail man for our mail, and when the mailman lights into him for no apparent reason and I ask what's going on, the mailman turns to me for back up and affirmation, again not realizing I'm his mother.....

Such sick people in this world. Thank God for all the rational people there are to balance them out.

Jan 23, 2020 add this to the list: possess large amounts of money.

A Bank called the cops on a black man trying to cash a settlement check for racial discrimination. He banked with this company for 2 years. Ridiculous.

I hope the deposit from the next settlement check for THIS lawsuit is even larger than the last one.
