While it seems there was some uneven adherence to the rules, it never works for a black person--even Serena Williams--to say that other non-black/males have gotten away with the same behavior. We know that we are conspicuous in predominantly white spaces and will be held to a different standard. A shame, and unfair, but the truth. Bad behavior is never seen as a reflection of an individual simply having a tough moment when the individual in question is black--it becomes an excuse for covert and overt racism.

Take a look at this Australian cartoon, in which the artist chose to portray Serena in the style of the Sambo-style depictions of black people common 100 years ago. Also see how Osaka is portrayed in the same cartoon.

Wow, that is horrible!

Interesting that Osaka is portrayed with blond hair. Also, that she is being asked to "let" Serena win when she is the one who was awarded the extra point and game.

PP here. Yes, I noticed that--I guess he's trying to say that Williams felt entitled to the win.

Perhaps but Osaka was outplaying her handily in the match.....so there's that.

Did you catch the pacifier on the court? Nice touch.

Yes, nice misogynistic touch to infantilize a woman who is demanding fair treatment.

omg 'demanding equal treatment'.

no she was having meltdown because she was losing. it was precipitated by a questionable call and it is understandable. however doubling down on it does nobody a favor. certainly no other player will be impressed by her 'equal rights concern. it's a baloney, almost everyone knows it and shame on those who are trying to use this unfortunate incident as a cause... I am all for equal pay and paid maternity leave and presenting Serena's tantrum as part of that fight is beyond ridiculous.

The previous post said "fair" treatment, not "equal."

And we get it. Some people either dislike Serena or are big Osaka fans, but whichever it is, they are happy Serena lost and they don't want anyone to acknowledge that the chair umpire made a mistake in a high level, crucial match by awarding a point and an entire game to one of the competitors, thus affecting the outcome of the match.

no, you don't get it. i was rooting for serena as i do most of the time (but then i don't care for women's tennis all that much). the coaching warning was a judgment call - within rules but, in retrospect, clearly bad judgment. of course if serena didn't overreact to it out of all proportion nobody would remember it. it was just a stupid warning. she should have rolled with it rather than going back to it over and over again. and guess what - if she was winning that is exactly what she would have done.

+1 She's one of the greatest female athletes of all time....she clearly should have responded more appropriately. And the call didn't impact the outcome of the match....Osaka was dominant.

ok so you know nothing about tennis whatsoever but you think serena's coach is dumb for coaching her? unbelievable.

Coaching her enough to get a game penalty? That's not dumb?
Maybe you could go ahead and explain it to me.

He did not coach her enough to get a game penalty. That is why it is an issue. Male tennis players and Osaka's coach ... they coached more but were not penalized.

That is an issue. Unequal treatment.

hahahhahah
you are so stupid and ignorant, you don't understand the basics of what happened:
there was not penally for coaching. she was only issued a warning, which is nothing assuming you don't proceed to break your racket and throw the temper tantrum of the year.

she didn't get a game penalty for coaching. coaching itself was merely a warning. a warning on its own carries no penalty but sets the stage for increasing penalties down the line.

so, was that the coach's fault? Sounds like the coach's fault. Was the coach doing it more blatantly than other coaches do?

No the coach wasn't doing anything more blatantly. And while the initial warning was for what he did, but then Serena escalated the situation by arguing with the ump (at least twice) and breaking her racquet. If she had maintained her composure, the ump wouldn't have had a reason to overstep his authority.

She bullied the umpire and the poor other lady.

And before you buy into her sexism allegations, just consider a simple fact.

A world-class famous star confronts a little guy no one has ever heard of.

Who's the bully?

She was a bully because she used the moment and the crowd to intimidate her opponent. If you understand anything about tennis you'd know that players get n a rhythm, either good or bad. Osaka had positive momentum and was in a good rhythm with her shots but Serena derailed her by constant delays arguing with the ump. It happens all the time but it's poor sportsmanship.

Yes, it was so wrong and so sad. Katrina Adams has been a disgrace as well. I don't understand how people can't see that this is about elitism, not about equality or social justice. Same is seen in men's tennis. Lower ranked players are not allowed to get away with anything, while the big 3 walk like Gods among them. This is also about the money, US Open and other slams know who audience wants to see play and who brings them money. Who brings more money? Serena or a new kid on the court?

Yeah, can we talk about Katrina Adams. I thought her speech was the worst. It stirred the pot of the crowd, pandered to Serena and that was when Naomi really started crying. She had held it together pretty well until then.

I wish you and many other white critics here could step back and see that this is your repressed racism coming out here. This is the same repressed racism that makes you all hate on M Markle without having any real reason. You are hyper critical and rush to condemn any potential misstep by these dynamic and successful women of color. You will hold up the rule book and exclaim “but she broke xyz rule and that is just how it goes” but I didn’t hear anyone picking up the rule book every time a man broke the same kind of rule and wasn’t checked for it. You will come up with any and every reason to diminish these women and others like them. This is why black parents have been telling their children for generations that they have to be twice as good to be considered half as good as whites. It doesn’t matter how well the assignment is complete overall, if there is a t or i left uncrossed or undotted, a white pwrson will find and run with it to prove your unworthiness. So, when you find yourself asking again and again why does Serena seem so have such a chip on her shoulder, please understand that you helped put it there by continuing to ask the question.

DP. No it is not. You must not watch tennis. She is nasty on the court when she loses her temper. Men get warnings all the time, they argue all the time, but never to that level of insulting and yelling. The other player is black too, no? Serena has accomplished a ton, I mean insane number of titles and success. You should tell your kid to take a look at Naomi Osaka and take her as an example of an African/Japanese role model. Serena has no reason for a chip on her shoulder, not anymore. We can't all act like she is 10 year old girl. Today Djokovic had to replay a point that was good but called out, he didn't' lose his mind, and he is known for losing his mind. But, he was winning, see the difference here? Serena is a role model to so many kids, she should act like a mom that she is, like a legend that she is. This is beneath her.[/

Are you blind... Men ... Never argue to that level. You are showing your bias. When men do the same or worse it's okay, when women do it it's disrespectful.

You are blinded by your prejudice and can't actually comprehend what I wrote. Oh, well, I tried. How many men have you heard tell the lineswoman that she will shove the ball down her throat? I bet you none in public setting, but Serena has said it loud and clear. You keep thinking she was right, did you even watch it?

Agassi told that ump he was a son of a bitch. Nothing. There’s a video of Djokovic breaking racket after racket cussing. Djokovic has also made threatening comments to the ump. Wozniak ask the line judge if he was blind and if he had actually gone to school. She then requested his supervisor. Jimmy Connors threatened and cussed out the ump. McEnroe was famous for his cuss outs. Jeff Tarranga called the umpire corrupt and left the court. Nastiest was notorious for threatening both his opponents and the line umps.

"not the ending we hoped for" - seriously? millions of people across the world watched the match. not all of them rooted for serena, fewer still so passionately to be upset by her loss. and serena the built on it with 'we will go through this'.

most of these men actually got warnings and breaking the racquet is an automatic penalty. serena's problem was that she did it all - coaching, racquet and multiple tantrums.

John McEnroe did that every match.

That was 40 years ago. Wouldn’t fly today.

But it does, whenever Djokovic decides he wants to or if he feels cheated by the ump.

Even if we take that position on it, I think something needs to be said for recognizing she is human, and has had roadblocks thrown at her by the sport constantly since she returned from maternity leave (and even before that). She was attacked for her seeding at Wimbledon. The French Tennis Federation created a new dress code specifically the target her outfit, which she wore for medical reasons, because it was a little too Black for their taste. She's already been drug tested five times this year while other, whiter players have been tested once or twice. And in that tournament she gets hit with a warning that typically isn't called and is based on something her coach was doing rather than her in what was clearly a targeting of her by the umpire. So she lost her cool. Because she is only human, and the tennis community as a whole has been treating her like shit non-stop for months now. Yes, ideally she wouldn't have, but maybe we need to do a little reflection on everything that led to that moment instead of just attacking yet again.

That's how women are categorized when standing up for themselves... Hysterical... Men are assertive. Double standard.

There is a straight up racist a few pages back but somehow you managed to make the most annoying post in the thread

No kidding. Since when is smashing your racquet in anger “standing up for” yourself?

Ask Sampras, Agassi, Sharapanova, Nader, Djokovic and all the many other players who have smashed racquets.

It may be that she was trying to diffuse the crowd and that what she meant was that it was unfortunate that referring issues played a part in the ending, but in any event, her speech fell flat and was offensive to the winner who played a truly phenomenal game capping off a wonderful tournament.
