I'm curious, how is Sterling doing not that you're no longer affiliated with Soccer from Brazil? My understanding is that Gus took several teams with him. Seems like Sterling should just merge with Herndon.

Someone smart: please interpret the 2014 All-Met soccer squads and explain what the honors say about travel teams in Maryland and potentially elsewhere. Or just ignore this thread and buy more seasonal junk. It's up to you.

How many players from top travel teams play high school soccer?

Interesting question. Boys on Development Academy teams are not allowed to play high school soccer, and I have heard that some ECNL teams discourage (but do not forbid) girls from playing high school, though I don't think that's the norm. I would assume that most players from top teams that do not fall in the above categories do play high school soccer, because it's fun to play with and in front of your school friends, represent your school, be a star, etc.

I think if my child were a serious recruiting prospect for a college that he was excited to attend/play soccer at, I'd be pretty nervous about him playing high school though. The risk of injury definitely increases between the overuse factor of practicing high school every day while keeping up with the club practices, and the larger number of aggressive and/or unskilled opponents you face in high school games. Middle school soccer was downright frightening (and painful to watch if you are used to good club soccer matches), and kids seemed to get injured every week.

It varies widely by area. On a national title contender like Braddock Road's top teams, I wouldn't expect them to play high school soccer. But near Baltimore, high school soccer is a big deal. Not sure what it says about travel teams in the All-Met area.

Also not sure why we're talking Maryland soccer in the "NOVA" thread anyway. There's really no comparison of HS soccer in Maryland and Virginia because they play different seasons (except for some private schools). They're not competing against each other for All-Met spots.

Fair enough, but the original post was asked about travel soccer teams "around NOVA", which could certainly include metro-area teams in Maryland and DC. There are many kids from MD and DC playing on NOVA teams and vice versa. This thread has wandered though a pretty big variety of topical areas since it started 8 months ago...

True, though in this case, we're talking about Maryland high school kids.

It occurred to me that the OP here might have trying to infer that Maryland dominated the All-Met teams, not realizing that most Virginia schools don't play fall soccer.

How do clubs/coaches around here feel about parents contacting them to ask if they have open spots? Is this something parents shouldn't do? We're moving into the area soon and would like our kids to play travel this spring, if possible. Thanks.

If you're new to the area, there should be no problem. They understand why you're doing it, they're always interested in getting better players and neither you nor they are breaking any rules about recruiting since you're from out of town.

Different poster here. Which leagues have anti-recruiting rules? If I recall correctly, NCSL doesn't forbid recruiting, but WAGS does. What about other leagues?

McLean is apparently looking to form an alliance with another club in order to strengthen their ECNL program. Has anybody heard who they have been talking to? Geographically, Vienna makes the most sense but prior merger talks between the clubs proved fruitless and right now, the clubs seem to have very different aspirations (community vs. competitive). Mclean can’t feasibly look across the river since Bethesda has that area locked down, Arlington seems the next logical choice. Great Falls and Reston offer no upgrade in talent. Sterling and Herndon are too far away. Annandale is already associated with FC Virginia. Braddock Road would seem a good fit but isn't as close as Arlington.

Anyone know what's going on?

Vienna has had a lot of strong girls teams, even with a few players going to McLean to join ECNL teams. Maybe not an outright merger, which would be really difficult given the differences in the clubs, but an affiliation like the Annandale-FCV tie?

CCL has anti-recruiting rules. You can't move from one CCL club to another mid year.
