It's not that deep, imo. Last time around, Trump knew that AG and SecDef were serious important appointments and picked accordingly. Now, he's just picking at random. He's too old and has lost his savvy.

What is Trump getting out of this?

Probably something to do with Papa Gaetz.

Either papa Gaetz has something on Trump or he is paying"tribute.". There is nothing trump will not do for money.

+1 he either

A.appoints a poor choice and inexperienced AG and associates himself with a child predator

Or

B. Is undermined by his party publicly if they block his appointment.

So what is the point?

Or C. All Trump really cares about is how loyal the nominee is, to himself.

Some background information on how the Gaetz nomination came about.

So keeping count:

Musk, DJT Jr, Tucker Carlson and other surrogates came out publicly for Rick Scott as Senate majority leader and then Scott got a max of 13 votes and didn't even make the final ballot. Thune, who is closer to Trump than Cornyn, wins the final vote but it's 29-24 so hotly contested.

Boris and Gaetz convinced Trump to nominate Gaetz for AG without Susie Wiles knowledge and obviously without any notice to Thune or anyone in the Senate. Cornyn, fresh off his defeat but likely encouraged by his vote total, calls for the ethics probe into Gaetz to be released. At least one Senator has already said she won't vote for Gaetz (Collins) and others have indicated deep concerns.

Separately, Trump nominated Rubio to State without giving Ron Desantis any heads up. Desantis found out from the NYT while on vacation in Rome and then got a message from a Trump toadie indicating that they would appreciate it if Desantis would appoint Lara Trump to Rubio's seat kthnxby. Meanwhile Desantis was eyeing that seat for himself since he's term limited and would no doubt prefer to appoint a loyal placeholder from his own office.

Also regarding the Rubio appointment, there was apparently a ton of opposition in Trump's team on this one because they don't trust Rubio and don't think he'll be loyal, and there was a hard push for Rick Grinell. So now Grinell feels slighted (we'll see if he gets something else) and a bunch of Trumpies are already side-eyeing Rubio unhappily on top of the whole Desantis issue.

Same as it ever was. I think the first firing will happen before inauguration, maybe several.

I agree that he learned the importance of these appointments, but he is not picking randomly now. He is now picking by loyalty. Last time around he was picking people recommended to him. Various generals, Tillerson etc. People he didn't know.

Disagree. The ethics committee would not have held off and dithered this long if there was nothing there. They've been hoping he'd get charged and they wouldn't have to be the ones to act. Gary's resigned so they thought they were in the clear. Now the Senate is asking them to act.

Watch Thomas Massie being interviewed on the go yesterday. "Suck it up"!

He only ran for a pardon and if he can't pardon himself then he has a promise from vance that he will pardon him. Trump loves a parade so he wants an inauguration. He resigns because of "Health" shortly thereafter.

He's picking people he knows and feels he can work with but I think it's a stretch to say he's picking by loyalty. That indicates that loyalty as a concept exists in Trump's universe, which it doesn't. Fealty and fear and the confidence that these people will act in their self-interest. Trump is choosing people he feels like he owns. He's selecting people he believes have something to gain from getting these appointments and that Trump can get something from them by offering them. Or he's appointing people who owe him or need him in some way so he feels they will do what he wants in order to keep him happy. Gaetz is all of this at once -- he needed a way out of this ethics probe that was likely to lead to him being ejected from the house and this gives him a good one, plus he needs Trump more than most people in Congress because everyone HATES Matt Gaetz except Trump and his devoted loyalists.

Loyalty is not the word for any of this. It's transactional. They are only "loyal" to Trump so long has he wields power and right now he wields a lot of it. And he's not loyal to any of them and would cut any one of these people loose in a heartbeat.

Trump isn't even trying to pretend he'll be a good president. He's just going to be a grifting grenade.

Anyone who pretends they are excited about this appointment, or Kash Patel or Tulsi Gabard is just not making sense. These are all objectively scary picks - not because they are maga but because they don't believe anything but whatever trump tells them to say. He just wants a bunch of yes men like Vance 3.0.

It could be the opposite. Once Senate Republicans reject Gaetz - to bipartisan, popular acclaim - they may grow a spine and regard themselves as the guardians of the Constitution and go ahead and reject the rest of the clown show - the Fox news personality, the Russian asset, etc. It only takes four Republican senators to vote nay. I live in hope.

My totally unfounded conspiracy theory:

Matt Gaetz resigned from the House immediately after being nominated as Attorney General because he has a deal with Ron DeSantis to appoint him to the U.S. Senate if the U.S. Senate doesn’t (a) go to recess and allow Trump to make a recess appointment, or (b) confirm Gaetz as AG.

And if Ron DeSantis appoints Matt Gaetz as Rubio’s replacement in the U.S. Senate, Trump will then nominate DeSantis as Attorney General as part of their deal.

Two for one special!

If they are a senator outside of a swing state I don’t get what they are so afraid of. I don’t think there are as many loyal MAGA voters like people think, just regular republicans.
