No point in expecting a decent tip from this DB, minimum service time.

What’s the “decent tip” (percentage of the whole bill) you’re expecting here? To clarify: a server sees a person and thinks, I can already tell I won’t get more than __% of the bill with this “DB,” so I’ll just give minimum service.

No, the server doesn't just "see" the person, they interact with them initially and often it's pretty easy to tell who the anti-tipping a*holes are by the way they act. I'm sure all the anti-tippers on this thread don't think I'm talking about them because they are all just wonderful, polite, fun people who no server would judge harshly. Some ought to wake up to the concept that if you are anti-tipping and yet you go out to eat at a place where the servers rely on tips to live then just maybe your a*holishness is obvious for everybody to figure out.

This. I concur

Why not just make your own food and stay home?

That comment is so old

I always tip on carry-out because they are still preparing the food, regardless of where you sit. I leave it to the restaurant to determine how to split it out.

I don't care what anyone says - 15% with eat in (only if service is acceptable), 0% w/ take outs. There's no insult you can try to change that.

So, after 26 pages, not even one person changed their mind??

This is the correct answer. The 15% is based on the pre-tax amount. Growing up in MD in the 90s I would always tip three times the 5% sales tax to make the math easier (no smartphones then of course).

So many trolls, making this site no longer helpful or fun.

I don't think they are trolls. I think there are some intellectually challenged people who stubbornly insist they are right which is certainly not a phenomenon exclusive to tipping these days. The funny thing about that is that both sides probably think I am talking about the other side.

No both sides think you are just mentally challenged.

Well that made a lot of sense. You are evidence of my theory.

No, in the US the standard is 20% unless the waiter dumps your food on you and/or sits in your spouse’s lap. Just tip 20%. No more, no less.

Wrong 15% is standard. They should pass a law indicating how much tip a waiter requires to make minimum wage per table, that would settle this debate.

Anti tipping is not the same as tipping 15-20%.

Servers may rely on tips, but lots of others don't (cashiers at Panera, Sbux workers, etc.) Additionally, servers may be able to expect tips as it is standard in the industry, expecting more than the norm simply because you rely on them for income is not enough. Every single person making low wages would feel entitled then.
