If Ron DeSantis promises a national abortion ban he will take the nomination from Trump. There’s plenty of time for him to make a move.

No. “There are several explanations for why this is happening, including the backlash to Trump’s indictment, DeSantis’s near total lack of charisma, and concern among Republican elites about the sweeping abortion ban he just signed. But there’s another dynamic at work here, and I think it’s the big one: Like Trump’s 2016 rivals, DeSantis is making the mistake of believing that the primary race is about issues, while Trump instinctively understands that it’s about dominance.”

And the Republican base is hungry to make even more gains on abortion. Any candidate who promises a national abortion ban will make Trump look weak by comparison. GOP primary voters don’t want to “leave it up to the states”.

You are living in a dream world. Any Republican candidate that promotes this will be dropped like a hot potato by donors. This is a toxic, losing issue.

Pundits seem surprised that many R's are sticking to their guns on this. I'm not and I'm surprised that the pundits thought being anti-abortion was just for show.

1. Not a problem. They will make up for it with lots of small donations from the base.
2. This is a toxic, losing issue in the general election. It is a winning issue in the Republican primary.

As you say, the Republican base fully believes its own rhetoric and is totally committed to the cause. They don’t believe they are out of touch.

He's great in unscripted situations. Just a total natural in front of the camera.

Huh, it seems like everyone meets DeSantis in person then leaves like they just had Thanksgiving dinner with the moon landing conspiracy theory side of the family. Funny how Rs here keep claiming Trump won't be the nominee. If he's running against DeSantis then even FoxNews will be having Trump on air ranting about Dominion and risking another $1bil check.

+1 and adding that Jon Lovett on Pod Save America compared him to Walter Peck, the villain in Ghostbusters. 😃

Also, DeSantis is really grateful to Carlson for kicking this deeply weird video out of the news cycle.
