1. Not a problem.  They will make up for it with lots of small donations from the base.
2. This is a toxic, losing issue in the general election.  It is a winning issue in the Republican primary.

As you say, the Republican base fully believes its own rhetoric and is totally committed to the cause.  They don’t believe they are out of touch.[/quote]
