Haircare for women who exercise/sweat daily

Anonymous

For you women who exercise almost daily, tie back your hair, and sweat daily, how do you prevent hair damage?

I exercise 6X a week for years and now my hair is so damaged. I pull my longish hair in a ponytail when I'm exercising. I think when I sweat, my hair at the crown breaks, leaving me with a ton of small (1-2 inches long) baby hairs all along the front of my hairline. I have tried hair bands, braids, different hair styles, etc. and I haven't found anything that can do the job. I need something to hold the baby hairs off my face because my hair so slippery and most bands just fall off. I wash my hair daily after my workouts.

My workouts are pretty strenuous (think Insanity/T25/P90X workouts) and require a lot of jumping/movement so pulling my hair back off my face/neck is a must.

Hair products, shampoo/conditioners, hair style suggestions welcome!!!

Thanks

I just use two or three of these hair clips you press and indent for my bangs and a no damage pony holder for my hair.

And I do sweat, but I simply don't wash every day. That's the best way to prevent damage.

But if you have to wash every day, use an all natural shampoo with NO sulfates (which destroy your hair) and deep condition once a week.

A good headband perhaps?

I like the non-slip Brady Bands

I exercise and shampoo daily. I have my entire life.

My hair is healthy and shiny. I also blow dry daily.

Genetic? I am 44 now. I now get a semi-perm all over color every 5 weeks to cover roots.

I think if I highlighted it would be too damaging for my hair. I think this is also why my hair has stayed glossy. I am not stripping/bleaching it. It's dark so highlights would be damaging.

I just pull my hair back with those fabric elastic bands into a pony tail. No damage. They are soft without that little gold thing on the old Goody bands.

Could you get away with washing every other day? I work out every day but wash every other day. I use dry shampoo on the non-wash day so my hair isn't smelly or greasy. My hair is much healthier when I don't shampoo every day. As far as holding your hair back, I've heard good things about the Lululemon headbands with silicone liners so they stay put.

How do you PP get away with not washing your hair after sweating? Besides the oil/sweat, doesn't your ponytail leave an "indent" in your hair after you pull the ponytail out, esp if you were sweaty and your hair got wet?

I have very thick hair, so even after a tough sweaty workout my hair isn't that wet. I'll let it dry and spray on some dry shampoo, let it soak up the oils, and brush it out with a boar-bristle brush. After that it looks and smells freshly-washed (I have asked my husband, best friends and sisters for a whiff test to make sure I'm not one of those people who is in denial about their stinky unwashed hair!). I know what you mean about the ponytail indent--usually I'll do a messy bun or twist, but if I want to wear my hair down I'll do a few passes with a flatiron to smooth it out.

I workout 6x a week also, but several months ago, switched to washing my hair every other day.

I have what amounts to a lion's mane of baby hairs around the beginnings of my hairline, so I do wear a stretchy headband in addition to ponytail/bun.

I have long, thick hair, and I sweat a LOT from my head. After a good workout, my head is virtually saturated. It's gross.

I shower daily of course, and rinse my hair with water daily - but shampoo/condition every other day. The result is that my hair is a little oiler than normal, but I end up putting it in a bun or braid.

However, on the days I DO shampoo/condition, my hair is then like a Pantene ad. It's glorious. It wouldn't be as glorious if I washed daily, so the sacrifice of only rinsing after some workouts, is worth it.

I wash my hair with some hippie shampoo I bought at WF and then use a regular shampoo every other day. The hippie shampoo is coconut based. It gets the sweat out but isn't a "real" shampoo.

I have curly, dry hair that breaks easily. I rinse it with water and condition it daily. I wash it about once a week.

This. I condition daily but shampoo once a week. The conditioner will get the sweat out but isn't as harsh as the shampoo.

If you have to wash your hair everyday, try doing a co-wash. Basically you skip the shampoo and just use conditioner.
