Cheerios with rice milk healthy?

Would you consider cheerios with rice milk a healthy meal/snack? Busy SAHM here trying to do my best with a chronically ill child. Ive been eating cheerios with rice milk about 2 times a day as it is quick and easy.

Thoughts?

I would switch to hemp or almond milk just to get a little more protein in--that'll keep you full longer.

Cheerios contain GMOs, so you might consider switching to an organic brand of o's cereal. Cascadian Farms is an example.

Real milk would be healthier. Throw in a banana and you're good.

Switch to shredded wheat for more protein and fiber.

Rice milk, especially Imagine Foods' Dream brand has a TON of sugar. Try a low-sugar, higher in protein cereal like Kashi GoLean! with Unsweetened almond or coconut milk with some blueberries & blackberries on top. You could also try Better n'Oats or Mom's Best oatmeal packets with 0 g of sugar. Thin the oatmeal with water or thicken it with the unsweetened almond milk. Add some berries or some nuts. You can also make a batch of quinoa, served cold at breakfast for the whole week and sweeten that with Stevia or a little honey.

Cheerios no longer contain GMOs check your boxes to be sure.

Op here- rice milk is natures promise brand nut milks and cow milk are out due to allergies.
Basically asking to see if it is an "okay" combo. Doesnt need to be over the top on the health charts but also don't want to continue if its not at all a healthy choice. Breakfast is usually plain oatmeal with a little honey.

Don't Cheerios have sugar?

Not much sugar, about 1 gram per serving. Most dry cereals run 9 -15 grams / serving.

I hate to bring it up, but there is a big issue with rice--it's got arsenic in it and the organic seems to have even more.

Check consumer reports--they have done in-depth analysis of this issue, and have a report out and a follow-up out.

I'm sorry to bring it up, OP--but chronically ill child, 2x a day--just feel like I need to mention it because that's a lot of rice milk.

Their website is consumerreports.org and it's also been in their magazine. Or just google it.

Op here- thanks for the rice milk info.

Our chronically ill child does not drink rice milk. I have it twice a day at most (2 cups).

Perhaps dry cheerios would be healthier.

As a PP mentioned, hemp milk would provide more protein and doesn't have the same concerns (sugar, contaminants) as rice milk. Flax or coconut milk might also work depending on the specific allergy.

It's fine. The cheerios are fortified with lots of vitamins. The milk is good for you. Throw in a banana and strawberries once in a while?

In your situation, this is a perfectly good solution .

Cherios with rice milk sounds like an unhealthy snack or meal to me. Both are highly processed foods that are the product of our industrialized food system and not traditional foods.

Also, I would check the packaging or a glycemic calculator to confirm this, but it sounds like a high glycemic meal. All carb and little fat or protein. That causes your blood sugar to spike and then makes you more hungry.

How about making a big batch of hard boiled eggs and having one of those instead? Dip it into a little pile of salt and pepper.

Other quick snacks that work for me are: whitefish salad (or smoked salmon) on toast or crackers, slice of cheese (dubliner is a favorite), small piece of 70% dark chocolate, nuts, miso soup, fried egg on buttered toast, or popcorn (from air popper) with olive oil, salt, and nutritional yeast.

OP, I'm sorry that your child is ill. Best wishes for your whole family's health.
