Please help me make sense of this. My period was one late so last week I took a urine pregnancy test. It was positive. Very dark lines. I called my doctor and made an appointment. This past Friday, I saw my ob/gyn and told him I had a positive pregnancy test but was using the calendar method and was not trying to get pregnant. This has worked for us for the past 18 months. He sent me for a blood pregnancy test at the lab and my results came back today. The nurse said there is a 0.01 percent chance I'm pregnant. I asked her again. I was very surprised but relieved. In the past week, I've felt more tired than usual. I regularly work out and eat right but I had to force myself to function today. I forced myself to hit the gym this evening. Feeling like something isn't right, as of 1:10 am tonight, I took another urine pregnancy test. It's positive! Very dark lines again. I'm baffled. I have kids and I've never had a miscarriage or a false positive pregnancy test. I'm almost 30. How could two urine pregnancy tests be positive five days apart yet a blood test show a negative result? I don't know what I should do. Should I force my doctor's office to do another blood test on me? Could this be ectopic? I can't sleep but I'm tired. |

Yes, get another blood test and make an appt with your doc.
You've been having sex without using birth control, you haven't gotten your period, you feel tired, and you have two positive pregnancy tests. I guess it's possible you have some weird endocrine issue but chances are you are pregnant. |
| It definitely sounds like you are pregnant. Maybe they confused your blood test with someone else's. |

The same thing happened to me, Op. I was only a few days late but took a preg test at home and it was positive. I went to the doc to have it confirmed and it came back negative (I believe it was a urine test). After a few more days of preg symptoms/no period/feeling run down I went back to the lab and they did a blood test - positive.
Definitely treat your body as though you are pregnant and go back for another test. |
| Go get another blood test. Either the nurse read the wrong results or you misunderstood what she said. |
| Ask to speak to the doctor. Perhaps what the nurse meant was that you have low levels of HCG, the hormone supporting the pregnancy, or she was reading those levels to you. At any rate, speak to the doctor. |
This. I'm confused by the ".01 percent chance you're pregnant" result from the blood test. Blood test measures hcg levels. Either it's there or it's not. It's the same hormone the urine test looks at. Most of the time they will test for the quantity of hcg in your blood. If its more than a trace (I.e. higher than 5), you're definitely pregnant. Sometimes they only test for its presence. Maybe that's what they did this time? I would definitely ask for another test. I honestly don't think it's possible to have a positive urine test, and a negative blood test (I've heard of cases of the opposite, negative urine and positive blood, because some people don't throw off hcg in their pee). |
| no mystery. you are pregnant. |
| Get an ultrasound. They can do that at only a few weeks. |
| Ps, this was done with a wand at my regular OB/GYN office at my very first appt. And you could see the cells that would be the heart pulsating. |
| OP here. I'll call my doctor today and ask to speak with him directly. I'll update the post later on. Thanks. |

Could it also be that you were pregnant and now are not?
|
| Id be concerned about an ectopic or something like that- esp. if you were using a sensitive pregnancy test. |
I'll add that an ultrasound later confirmed that I absolutely had been pregnant on the day that the lab test came back negative. Labs make mistakes. |
| I'm going to the lab this afternoon for another blood draw. If this test is negative as well, I'll be surprised. The feeling of being tired hasn't passed either. |
