MyFitnessPal App is lifechanging

Anonymous
I saw recs for it on here aroun New Years and gave it a try mid-January. I've already lost 15 pounds (which seems like a lot but I am very overweight and tend to lose the first 10 pounds pretty much instantly any time I even begin to watch what I eat). It's the first "diet" that I actually feel good about. And the plus side of being very overweight is that I am starting with a pretty large calorie "allowance" so I am gradually cutting out "treats." Only downside is that I could see if I had a personality prone to disordered eating, this could exacerbate that. I do definitely feel like I'm "winning" if I have a few hundred leftover calories by the end of the day (but I usually waste those on dessert, so I don't think the anorexia is an issue just yet).

Anyone else used this?

How do you define disordered eating?

I suppose I was just using that as a euphemism for anorexia or otherwise severely limiting calorie intake. Obviously, I have an unhealthy relationship with food, or I would not be so overweight. But I am definitely too fond of food to be in danger of limiting my calorie intake to an unhealthy level. And I do in fact eat fairly healthy (very little meat very few carbs and almost no processed carbs unless I am specifically having a dessert item). But even if you were eating things like hard-boiled eggs, quinoa, kale salads, etc., it can definitely be unhealthy if you are eating the quantities that I tends to eat. The main thing I needed was portion control and an awareness of which foods have more calories. For example I have really cut down on my intake of cheese and dairy and have started eating spinach salad almost every day, because I like it pretty well and realize now that it is extremely low calorie. I had just never thought in terms of the caloric cost of foods before. I had only thought about foods is being healthy (to me this mainly meant being a whole food rather than processed) and now I am continuing to eat those whole foods but the ratio of lower calorie vegetables and whole grains versus fruits and Dairy has shifted.

Does anyone know how MyFitnessPal is different from the Lose It app?

I totally agree with the OP on this. MFP helped me lose 40lbs, but I have since abandoned it for intuitive eating and am 3lbs into losing my last 10lbs...for a goal weight of 140 (I'm 5'9"). I'm off MFP because the counting made me obsessive and I did not like that.

I would nave never started my weight loss journey with intuitive eating, but MFP has given me the skills to understand exactly how much I should be eating.

Good job OP!!!

I think that MFP is really helpful for people who are just starting to watch what they eat. Many people really have no idea how many calories they are consuming, and having to account for what I eat has changed my food decisions. Like, I will get that enchilada, but I won't eat the chips and salsa that are on the table. Or the bread. If you're ordering a pasta dish already, you really don't need to eat that bread as well.

I can see how it could be taken way seriously, but really, it's just a knowledge/accountability thing. Feels weird to feel like I'm accountable to an app, but there it is.

OP here. What do mean by intuitive eating?

It is good, but what makes it better is getting a Fitbit. Even the cheapest one ($50) . Ever since I have used that with the MFP site/ap, I have lost weight significantly faster.

Learning to eat when you are hungry and stopping when you are near full. Sounds like common sense right? It is much harder than you think!

I like MFP better because I think it has a much better database of foods than LoseIt

I know this sounds nuts but my problem with these kinds of apps is that I don't want people to see my weight on my phone. I tried the Weight Watchers app and my 5 year old read my weight out (without realizing what it meant) to my in-laws when I let her play with my phone at brunch!
