Why is Blake Lively so overrated?

I'm not saying I think anything he does in the scene is sexual harassment -- they are playing a love scene. I just don't get the comments saying she looks really comfortable or that they have a good dynamic. She quite clearly can't stand him and is trying to avoid him, and he (perhaps rightly) feels she's undermining his authority as a director.

The ONE thing he does that feels like it might put a teeny tiny toe over the line is when he says "it smells good." Given that she clearly can't stand him and this scene was pretty tense and combative to film, I can see why that jumped out at her as being inappropriate. But I don't think that by itself constitutes harassment -- just that I can see why, given the tone of this interaction, it probably felt icky to her.

I think she needs way more than this interaction to prove harassment. I'm just not getting the comments about how she seems to like him or be having a good time because I don't see that at all. They look to have a pretty unpleasant working relationship and I suspect all their intimate scenes were pretty hard to film as a result.

I am a different person and I also get a pulling away vibe from Lively in that scene, fwiw. And I could also understand it as Lively thinking it was supposed to be more about conversation and getting to know each other and less about nuzzling etc. But I don’t know and I hear the people saying this is a crazy read, also. I’m not sure we’re going to change one another’s minds at this point.

Blake looked like she was enjoying being around Justin in these outtakes.

Huh. To my eyes, she appears to loathe him and be pretty uncomfortable filming this scene. She seems to suggest that their characters be talking more because it will decrease the amount of time he spends nuzzling her neck or "almost kissing" her and she does not seem to enjoy that aspect of the scene. I also think she says the thing about his nose and laughs at him on purpose to push him away. It's a mean instinct but not that unusual -- she can't resist because she clearly hates him.

And the thing about him saying "you smell good" happens pretty much as she describes it. They are speaking to each other as Blake and Justin and he makes a comment about "getting beard on" her and she responds "I'm probably getting spray tan on you" -- they are talking about the artifice of acting out the scene. And then he says "it smells good" and you can see it makes her uncomfortable and she says "well, it's not that, it's my body makeup." This reads to me as her expressing that he's crossed a line and reminding him to be professional.

I can see how/why they both see it so differently and don't think either one is "lying" in their complaints. They are both telling the truth but he does not seem to get that his behavior is bothering her.

Was there an IC on set for this scene? It think a fundamental point in her complaint is that this scene was much more intimate than she expected based on the script, which simply says that the characters slow dance while "in their own world." But he's initiating a lot of intimate contact, nuzzling her neck and upper arms, starting these almost kisses where their faces are right next to each other. Meanwhile it's clear she thought the scene would be more about them interacting, talking, "falling in love" not just getting hot for each other.

Having an IC on set for a scene like this would help bridge the gap between those two ideas of the scene and also ensure that it doesn't cross lines, which Lively clearly thought it did.

I think this backs up her complaint even though it's not like overt harassment. It shows how uncomfortable she was and could be an example of a scene that was in fact pretty intimate but does not appear to have been choreographed or overseen by an IC. I can also see that he seems to be misreading the situation and seems to think her smiling/laughing is flirtatious, but to me it reads as the way a lot of women will smile instinctively when they don't like a man who is coming onto them, to try and keep their faces from betraying how they feel which might upset them. I can see the stakes being particularly high for her because she has to film the rest of this movie with him and she doesn't want him to realize she is repulsed by him. But she is.

?I watched it and they seem very comfortable with each other and smiling and joking the whole time.

I'm sorry but she clearly hates him. She's smiling because she's being filmed and she's supposed to be falling in love with him. Her jokes are a deflection. She's leaning back from him and his visibly bothered by him being physically close to her. She's suggests that their characters would be talking to try and keep him from nuzzling her. She breaks away from him numerous times by throwing her head back to laugh or initiating a dance spin because she doesn't like having him so close to her. She jokes about his nose to get him to back away from her. He makes the comment about her smelling good and she gets serious and is like "actually no I'm talking about my body makeup, this is not a come on."

It genuinely concerns me that some of you cannot see that she's very uncomfortable here. She isn't flirting, she's not into him AT ALL.

I have watched the video and discerned the complete opposite. She even touches his face at one point. Now that I have read your comments, I am going to rewatch.

I guess that’s why people say she’s a bad actress, because in this movie they’re supposed to be falling in love. If you think that she hates him in this scene the movie doesn’t work.

No one forced her to do a movie that had love scenes. Maybe she didn’t realize she wasn’t going to end up liking her costar, but I don’t think not liking your costar is grounds for claiming sexual harassment.

Agree with this - maybe she feels like she's grown out of this type of scene or role now that she is famous enough. Which is fine, but then don't sign up - there is nothing unique about these scenes, it's hardly an MA rated movie.

While after seeing this video, I just feel like she blatantly lied, in trying to give her the benefit of the doubt, I have always thought Ryan was controlling a-hole. I’m wondering if one of the reasons that she wanted to see all the footage is actually him demanding to see all the footage of them interacting.

I really think he’s behind so much of this. There is speculation that one of the reasons that she was uncomfortable during the promotion of this could be a trauma response. And I’m not saying that Ryan hits her but I think he could be very controlling and emotionally abusive.

So, why it makes me sad for her, Justin doesn’t deserve to be dragged into this, and doesn’t deserve to be labeled a sexual harasser just because RR is incredibly jealous and controlling.

He may also be a jerk but I think it’s silly to pretend women can never be problematic. Blake manages to be obnoxious in nearly all her interviews without any help from him.

Us giving theories on why she flipped doesn't mean we are excusing her behavior. She destroyed his career

I am seeing lots of people picking up theory that she liked him

Agreed. I saw the clip. They are joking around, reading lines. He talks about his nose, then she talks about it and they are laughing. She’s into the dance. He kisses her neck and something is said about spray tan. They laugh and then the scene is cut.

This is not SH!

If you watched the movie, you know this scene is from when she is fighting her attraction for him. So that part of the dynamic A where people says she is pulling away - is actually on point for the movie.

My read is that he is acting, and doing such a convincing job of being into her that it made self-absorbed Blake assume that he's NOT acting and he's really into her, which made her uncomfortable probably because her husband was on set. She has the nervous energy of a teenage girl yapping about nonsense to keep a guy from kissing her. She comes across as childish and unprofessional IMO.

They weren't on camera or acting during their deliriously laughing late night writing sessions.

That would mean she's a terrible actress then because it's literally a flirty/lovey scene!

I think it's shady that she gives him a hard time for talking ("nothing needed to be said") when she's the one who insisted they talk throughout that scene.

“At one point, he leaned forward and slowly dragged his lips from her ear and down her neck as he said, ‘It smells so good.’ None of this was remotely in character, or based on any dialogue in the script, and nothing needed to be said because, again, there was no sound — Mr. Baldoni was caressing Mr. Lively with his mouth in a way that had nothing to do with their roles. When Ms. Lively later objected to this behavior, Ms. Baldoni’s response was, ‘I’m not even attracted to you.’”

Oh, I agree with you. I think she is very problematic. But I don’t think it was her idea to take down this man. I think Ryan is a big part of it and escalated and out of control.

But I don’t think that Blake lied just to lie. I think he was egging her on.

I could be totally and completely wrong, of course. Maybe RR is a super nice guy. This situation is just so weird.

I don't believe any of that happened. Her "objection" was her probably being funny and he scarastically responded. Same with his nose comment. That was the relationship they had.

Just a blatant lie. He didn’t say “it smells so good” right after caressing her neck - he caresses her neck, apologizes that she was probably feeling his beard which seemed like a nice thing to do to break the awkwardness of doing a love scene, then she apologized that he could probably smell her spray tan or body make up or whatever, and he said it smells good.

The way that she described it was very deceiving and outright wrong. He would never have said she smells good had she not apologized for the smell of her spray tan. He was reassuring her. He wasn’t making a pass.

He was professional. This is not SH.

+1 I think Ryan blowing up at him before filming started says it all. I don't think Blake actually had a big problem with him asking the trainer her weight soon they were buddies afterwards. That was Ryan reacting badly. I bet Justin felt sorry for her.

It's so obvious from his tone that when he said "It smells good" about her fake tan he means "[Well, at least] it smells good." Like, if your fake tanner is going to get all over me, oh well, at least it smells good, what can ya do?
