Open, Delay or Closed? Announce already!

DCPS suck

Why do they need to announce they're open. They are.

Go do your homework.

Sitwell, Georgetown Day, Maret,.... Are all on 2 hr delay. Feds are on unscheduled leave/telework.

DCPS should announce one way or another.

It's obvious they're open on time.

Those schools and the Fed all have commuters from the suburbs where it is icy. They are delayed because of the weather conditions OUTSIDE of the District.

And no, they shouldn't announce "one way or the other." If you hear nothing, assume school is open on time.

Our charter follows DCPS so they will open on time too.

How are the roads in DC?

If weather is severe enough that the Fed Gov't is announcing then DC should announce, and they should announce consistently across all the media they said they would use to announce.

Last snowstorm, or maybe the snowstorm before, I went to bed with my smart phone set to WTOP, a station that DCPS suggests on their website as a place to look for school closings. Several times in the night, I woke up and refreshed but didn't see an announcement. Later I found out that DCPS had announced on Twitter and Facebook hours before they finally posted on WTOP. That's ridiculous. Information about school closings should be readily available, not requiring someone to "research" on various websites to find the one they chose to use this time.

DC had enough manpower last night to send the following, obnoxious in my opinion, tweet:

If they could do that, then they could notify the news networks that they've said they would use, and have a simple "open on time" listing.

To be clear, I'm not upset that they're open today. I'm merely upset about how they announce, or in this case, didn't.

OK, that's weird. That's an old tweet from a previous storm. The one that I attempted to copy, and that I think is obnoxious, is the one they sent out last night that says

HS Students: Schools are always open unless we make a closure announcement.

I think it's obnoxious, because it implies that wanting to know whether school is closed in time to make plans is something only HS students would want to know. If the issue is that they're getting multiple tweets because they don't announce clearly, then they should fix the issue, not send silly tweets like that.

Last storm, the mayor tweeted that DCPS was closing. DCPS is organized as ever...

Did they stop sending the texts? I had signed up for text alerts and did not receive them the last few times we had school closed.
Have they moved completely over to twitter?

Sounds like even if DCPS announces their status, we wouldn't know where to find it.

I think there is some context to the tweet that you may have missed. A couple of storms ago, a HS student tweeted the DCPS feed asking if schools would be open because she needed to know whether or not to do her calculus homework. The DCPS Twitterer replied back that calculus homework is always important. The student was thrilled to see her tweet acknowledged and since then the DCPS Twitterer has had an ongoing good-natured banter with the student and her friends. The tweet that you quote was DCPS way of saying, "do your homework".

That still doesn't explain why they have the manpower to engage in "ongoing good-natured banter" and not to post an announcement on their website that they have decided to be open today.

Are you dense. Why do they have to announce that they are open. Some people just need something to complain about. There is jus no pleasing people like you. If the schools were closed, they would let you know. Why do they need to announce that they are open. The schedule has not changed. Let them make announcements if their is a change in schedule, such as delays or closures.
