To be fair they are all like that. Loudoun, fairfax, Arlington.... all are going with this harebrained idea of beginning in person in January despite the fact people picked hybrid based on them using metrics that would make that NOT possible and are now being told deal with it anyway. |

APS subs received an email on/around the last day of school in December that said K-2 will be coming back towards the end of January. They are offering training again.
I don’t believe the older grades would start so soon after. |

“ We are notifying you that Arlington County Public Schools
Towards the end of January we are having K - 2 come back in person two days a week, and virtual two days a week. We will have sub teacher oppurtunities, instructional assistant positions, and support positions in person (temp checks, covering recess, etc.) Virtual jobs will still be available. ” |
| K-2 only?? 3rd grade should be included. |
K-2 is lower, 3-5 is upper. The division makes sense to me, but the timing is idiotic. |
+1. Especially considering teachers and staff should have the opportunity for the vaccine soon, which will not only help protect them but everyone else (yes I know the science is still out on whether you can transmit the virus if you've been vaccinated, but the more people are vaccinated, the more community spread will go down). I chose hybrid, based on the published school metrics at the time of the survey. Maybe we'll switch to DL. Or maybe my kid will just be "sick" the two days/week they are supposed to go in person until the numbers come down to a reasonable rate. It won't be great from a consistency standpoint, but neither is being forced to choose now or never for the chance of some in person school for the entire rest of the school year considering we're at the height of the pandemic. But that doesn't help the teachers and staff being forced to go back into the building so close to when it would truly be safer for them to do so. APS should have opened up hybrid a the beginning of the school year when they had the chance, and switch to full DL when the predictable surge hit, but they didn't. So now APS should pick a target date after teachers and staff get both doses of the vaccine, and in the meantime make a robust plan for remediation and hit the ground running. |
I worked in person in a different district this year. Let me tell you, there is no chance APS is paying anything close to enough to make it worth it to go in as a sub, IA, or other support position. For anyone remotely tempted: don’t do it. |

What is sad is even when they force us all back in in January the focus won’t be remediation or targeted instruction. It will be prepping them for the GD SOL’s they’re still making kids take.
The school systems have thoroughly ruined a job I loved |
The “Arlington Way” is trying to take too many different opinions into account and ending up with a CF. They should just do what needs to be done. Cut out the hysterics. |
Yes. No way will I be going in under these circumstances. I’m fortunate that I have a choice. |
I am spending this week of break actively applying to any other job. The good news is because our salary is garbage it won’t be hard to find something even close to what I currently make. As soon as I get an offer I’m out. |
Good luck, been nice knowing you. |
And good luck to you trusting the well being of your children in a system that only listens to and prioritizes the minority of richest loudest parents and their wants over everyone else’s needs |
what type of jobs are you applying to that will allow you to WFH, have summers and all holidays off? |
and a decent salary and benefits.. I think you may be in for a rude awakening. |
