This seems to be the linchpin, to convince Manchin, Murkowski and Collins to hold off on approving a "Motion to Proceed" until an FBI investigation can be undertaken in light of the allegations. They may also ask to hear from other witnesses.

This wouldn't mean they oppose Judge Kavanaugh on the merits. In effect, though, they stop the clock yet again while their conditions are met. The question then is whether the rest of the Republican caucus can bear to hold off and take the chance on what facts come to light out of such a probe.

If McConnell cuts bait at that point, and the President immediately withdraws the Kavanaugh nomination and submits a new one, they could jam that through before the new Senate is seated on January 3.

I just do not understand their loyalty to someone who is completely, wholly unfit for office. Is Mueller coming soon? I just don’t understand why otherwise they’d be obsessed with someone who has perjured, is $400K in debt to someone, talks about the Clintons (still?!).... what’s the love for Kavanaugh?

He's on record having said that sitting Presidents shouldn't be indicted. Not many jurists have said that. This all goes back to Trump's shady illegal behavior and his fear of Mueller and all the other investigations he's under.

But why the hurry? They could have put a polish on this third if they had slowed down: why the insane hurry? I sure wish Mueller telegraphed his moves.

So many reasons! 1. Mueller may make a move at any moment. 2. The supreme courts new term is about to start. 3. More allegations will probably come out. 4. If they field a new candidate there is a risk that they won’t be able to confirm before the midterms. 5. Getting rid of Kavanaugh may demoralize the base.

Confirming Kavanaugh is the only real move the Republicans have, despite the inevitable electoral consequences.

+1 If he were innocent he would have welcomed an investigation. There's a lot of people in Chevy Chase who won't feel comfortable having him around their kids anymore.

People in Chevy Chase are the most shallow folks I have met. They will absolutely have their children around s SCJ, even if he has a history of sexual assault.

In fairness, he has a history of being accused of an historical sexual assault as a minor, 36 years ago, which only came up due to an intensely partisan confirmation hearing where one party was actively searching for any reason not to confirm him. Don’t assume that everyone is unable to see the difference.

There were reports of his alcoholic fueled attacking of women from when he worked at the white house. Shut down by the republicans though.

His acting like a douche to sentators, violently yelling, throwing questions back at senators like a freakshow. He is a judge - and he has a huge temper and acted terribly. I wouldn't let him be around my dog, let alone my kids. He is not an entertainer like a trump.

His testimony yesterday was creepy. He may have impressed Donald Trump with his "testosterone" but it just validated the possibility he could be an angry, predatory drunk.

What is a Penalty of Felony?? Never heard of it. I have heard of Penalty of Perjury.

Prosecuting a crime that happened 36 years ago, for which there is no evidence beyond the accuser’s own testimony, is nearly impossible, and the process tears communities apart.

The Democrats did not do Ford a favor by encouraging her to go public with this.

The standard for a supreme court nominee has never been "could they be convicted" and it still shouldn't be.
Dr. Ford coming forward has actually exposed him for what he is, in a way that let us all see yesterday.

Incredibly partisan, unable to control himself, severe problem with decent behavior, no problem with perjury.

There has never been a more unfit judge.

Along with Kavanaugh. I hope they serve beer in hell.

It won't take that long. Sit back and watch what happens. It will not end well.

The goddamned truth.

If a trial lawyer acted the way Kavanaugh acted at the hearings yesterday...they'd be thrown in jail for contempt of court. K knows better, so he showed a tremendous lack of judgment and respect for the process. Dude seemed entitled and doesn't deserve a spot on the highest court in the land.

Nah, he will never look back. What he will probably have is a chip on his shoulder.

None of this is going away, difference between now and twenty years ago.

He clearly already was a freakshow. The good thing is now the rest of know.

Did you watch his 30+ hours of testimony 2 weeks ago?
Yesterday he was there defending his reputation, his integrity and his livelihood. He was facing people who had called him “evil” and a “danger to all.” He was facing people who had proudly and publicly said, “I believe her” before hearing any testimony. He had every right to be angry. He had every right to show his fury at these ridiculous charges.
And, no, he could not adequately defend himself without showing his outrage. Had he done that, you folks would still say, “Look... he really is guilty. An innocent man would have more anger.”

Face it - NOTHING he did would please you.

This. So much this.

I honestly cannot believe some people think he should have somehow handled himself better. The man is being acused of sexual assault. I expect him to be angry and show it.

He is not presiding over a court case. He is defending his reputation.

His upset during the opening statement didn't perturb me at all. His mention of revenge for the Clintons, though...he lost me there. There is no place for that kind of psycho-conspiracy-theory thinking from a Supreme Court Justice.

Also, an innocent man would answer yes or no questions straight up. He wouldn't divert and brag about his grades and the law school he attended repeatedly. He'd just answer the questions.

+1. It is easy to imagine after that combined with all the little untruths and evasion.

I’m losing faith that something decent will ever happen.

Oh, that was his testosterone leaking from his eyes. Makes sense now.

This completely. I feel very, very badly for his wife and family. But his upset was so clearly that he thinks he is above everyone else and how dare anyone question him. Entitled prick.

+2 I was actually willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on the gang rape accusation, but now I think he is definitely guilty.

I hope Montgomery County is investigating the alleged gang rapes. Those poor girls.
