Fleeing APS schools for FFX County

Or what? You’ll vote for that guy who wants to give even less to schools?
Great plan,Chief!

She has gone on record saying that if Arlignton received an unexpected windfall, she would not give any more to the schools. I’m sure it’s a tune the boomers love to hear, but she’s bad news for people who hope to eventually send kids to school in Arlington.

Ditto. I do not understand her at all. She's big on making childcare affordable -- which would make Arlington more attractive to FAMILIES. But doesn't care about properly funding schools for those families? Doesn't make any sense.

Your mistake is thinking that her concern is with the kids; it's not. She cares about making it easier to for millennial couples, particularly women, in Arlington to have children without having to make career sacrifices to accommodate them. Accessible childcare is an important part of that, the quality of the schools those children will eventually attend is not.

I really don’t understand her appeal. How did she get elected?

Yes. Let’s just do nothing and then complain about it later. Good approach.

You think making the situation affirmatively worse is better than maintaining the status quo for one more year? I don't think you understand the dynamics here. Vihstadt is willing to do far more for schools than de Ferranti, and he's opposed to further expansion of AH while de Ferranti supports its expansion. If we vote out Vihstadt in favor of de Ferranti, the message we will send to the CB is that voters want AH and don't want more money going to schools.

Dorsey and Cristol (both of whom are hostile to school funding) are both up for reelection in 2019. That's the year to make our statement. Not this year.

IIRC, that was the year with like five people running for two caucused nominations, and she kind of slid in there in the chaos.

Also, it's not like she campaigned on an anti-school platform, that didn't become evident until after the election.

OK. OK. Let's keep him around.

DP. To make it clear for anyone who doesn't want to bother with the link, here are some key portions:

"Vihstadt is waging a lonely battle against the oft-postponed project as the county’s budget picture grows increasingly grim. He says the $60 million the county’s set to spend on the new pool would be better spent on building new schools or buying additional park land, particularly considering that Arlington is feeling a financial squeeze at the moment.

[...]

"'Times change, circumstances change, and I just don’t think it’s right to go forward on that project,' Vihstadt told ARLnow. 'Schools have a higher priority. Parks have a higher priority.'

"Yet, just as when he cast the lone vote against the project’s construction last December, Vihstadt appears to be in the minority on that position. His four colleagues on the Board all told ARLnow that they wouldn’t support any effort to postpone the Long Bridge project, even with the county’s money troubles in mind.

Matt de Ferranti, by contrast, reiterated his position that the board is making the right decision by pushing ahead with the Aquatic Center.

She's got her eye on bigger things, and the CB is a steppingstone to higher office. But next year she should be held fully accountable for her unwillingness to address the schools issue.

Actually, I think she ran a tremendously strong campaign.

He's not wholly opposed to AH, but he definitely favors greater restraint in its growth than the rest of the board:

Last December, Vihstadt voted against a proposal for the county surplus (which ultimately passed anyway) in part because he didn't think extra funds should be allocated to the Affordable Housing Investment Fund: https://www.arlnow.com/2017/11/29/board-allocates-closeout-funds-to-affordable-housing-other-items/

Vihstadt supports mixed-income buildings and developments rather than 100% affordable/low-income units and opposed a proposal to require projects involving public facilities such as community centers to also include affordable housing: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/virginia-politics/ideas-for-adding-affordable-housing-will-get-airing-in-arlington-saturday/2015/03/26/2cc83798-d25f-11e4-a62f-ee745911a4ff_story.html?utm_term=.e30a6a930958

Was the only "no" vote on a proposal to make it harder for developers to convert multi-family dwellings to SFHs (a practice that tends to reduce the amount of affordable housing): https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/virginia-politics/arlington-creates-housing-conservation-district--but-some-say-too-quickly/2017/12/16/db9c91a6-e283-11e7-bbd0-9dfb2e37492a_story.html?utm_term=.8ab2b3b893e3

He also had some choice comments in the joint SB/CB work session this spring, but I'm not going to sift through a couple of hours of video to find them, you can watch it for yourself.
